question on issue after stage one tune.
Hi, im new to this forum but a long time M owner and i am hoping some of the more experienced knowledgeable people can share some insight on my situation.
i got a BMS stage one tune for my 2017 M4. car had 2800 miles on it when i installed the tune. car was running great for 3 days, about 150-200 miles. then when getting off the highway on my way home from work the car started to shake at idle.. then a few moments later the CEL came on with drive-train malfunction /limp mode.. i turned the car off right away and sat for about 20 min then started it and no change. code is showing misfire in cylinder 4. I brought the car to my shop and they are saying its most-likely a coil.. do these tunes on S55 motors cause coil issues? or do i just have bad luck? anyone have an issue like this after tuning? just seems strange that right after the tune i have an issue like this.. i dont believe in coincidence so im wondering if this is common? thanks |

BMS stage 1 and/or JB4 much better way to start for most, IMO. Then stack 'em with a flash & pro tune when it's no longer enough!

Haven't heard of a S55 throwing a coil/plug when it's that new..
Who knows though, cannot say I recommend jb4 after running it in my f80. Don't want this thread to literally explode, so I'll stop there lol

i only did the stage one not Jb4.. stage one is a quick, easy, clean install and im not doing DPs so i didn't do the JB4.. a lot of people seem to not like the BMS, not sure why but maybe it is cheap for a reason.. any one try the turner motorsport tune for the F80? or the active autowerks..? both are at or over $1000 as compared to the $379 for BMS.. what are the benefits to explain such a large price difference?

It almost always is user error or someone unwilling to work with BMS's free tech support to help them resolve whatever problem they have. The sheer number of very happy Stage1 and JB4 customers out there confirms how reliable, effective, and fun both products are.

Dont quote me on the vendor but 2 dealers in socal said they replace alot of spark plugs and coils under warranty. Mainly due to the ignition coil. Once the coil is replaced once, no more reoccurring issue. |

We changed vendors on the ignition coils awhile ago, that doesn't apply to the S55 as far as I know.
There have been spark plug failures with the S55. My JB4 on my N54 was outstanding. |

SOOoo to keep the Saga going.. car seemed to be OK I drove it for a few days 60-100 miles, mostly traffic commuting but got the car to red line a few times no issues "strong like bull" .. then last night got an open road and went to do a pull starting in 3rd about 3k rpm.. the car stats misfiring like crazy.. almost sounded like it was hitting a rev limiter at 6-6.5k RPM. so i slowed down to a 2nd gear roll slowly rolling on it and put in in 3rd at about 4k rpm and rolled on the gas to flat and again 6-6500 Boom snap crackle pop.. car wont go past 6k.. almost sounds like a crazy 2 step on a supra or evo .. so i got home and car almost cooled all the way after sitting a few hours.. went to grab dinner and once i got the car warmed up tried to do a pull again.. same thing but the car went in to limp mode.. pulled over (yelling up a storm) cycled the ignition 5-6 times.. car stated up no problem no CEL or limp mode.. i ran the codes and its 140010,140610,14001,14601.. all misfire codes..
i also did Knn filters.. can this be the issue? some have said bad gas? i only run 93 but will run tank to almost empty and refill.. or is it time to abandon the tune? thoughts... |

once the car started to misfire i lifted of course, but i did it a few times thinking it may clear it self up.. i thought possibly the car may be trying to learn the tune as some have told me its an adaptive tune and needs to learn each car for a few days.

Maybe also consider the NGK 5992 1-Step Colder Spark Plugs and gap to .022". Could be a shot in the dark but double check the connections to see if they are secure and not mixed up. Hope you get this resolved... I know it can be frustrating

It's also possible that the Stage1 boost is just too high for your setup, it lacks the fuel control of the JB4, and when trims max out the DME tends to run richer than needed which can cause misfires. Mike |

Mine put down 540whp on stock spark plugs..so I must have just lucked out.
Maybe try colder ones? Might be just how your engine responds. I'd say bring it to BMW but they'd void your warranty and flag the car most likely for running a tune. Try going to ACM or Rogue and have them check the car out.
