Most of the reviews of the 981 GT4 had very few nitpicks, but one of them was that the engine didn't feel as special as the rest of the car.

If the 718 version has a 9K RPM and about 400 BHP, it might be the best car we've seen from Porsche in a while. And that's saying something.
it very well might get a detuned GT3 motor, but if it does, you can bet starting MSRP will be big - easily $105k (base). And if it does rev to 9k, you can bet that it will have a lot more HP than 400 (they'd probably peg it at something like 440). the 981 GT4 had 385.

I can't remember - what did the 991.1 3.8L have from a BHP level - wasn't it 475 or so?

I can see Porsche "allowing" the 718 GT4 to approach the 991.1 GT3's level of performance...so your post makes sense.

Such a car would be worth a ramen noodle diet for 10 years, or whatever time frame it would take to make the finances work out.

When they announce the new GT4. Word on the street is it won't even be out until next year 2019. As Geneva should see the reveal of the new GT3RS. In the UK at least our dealers won't take any deposits only letters of interest as Porsche dealerships themselves don't know when the new car is coming.

EDIT: Also I think the new one will stay NA, either a 3.8 tuned to around 400bhp or a detuned 4.0L to around the same bhp. They will also keep the price under 100k as not to step on the toes of a GT3 (base is 111k in the UK). It'll again be following the drivers car policy that Porsche are creating to separate it from their out and out track time target driven technological power houses (GT2RS)

AP already said that Porsche will follow two paths. Drivers cars and performance cars. Know this the new GT4 will be very very hard to get hold of or get an allocation for. You certainly won't be able to walk into a dealership and say I'd like the new GT4 please without either a history with that dealership or history of GT cars

Thanks for all of the great feedback and suggestions! I feel pretty talked out of it :P

Have thought about a lot of these before, especially the GTI/Golf R, Audi A3/4, E46/E90 3-series.

The truth is, I actually love my E36. If it wasn't a rusty Canadian car that needed a ton of new parts, I'd keep it in a heartbeat. It's unfortunately very tough to find an E46 here without a ton of mileage (and that's not beaten up). Same goes for a mint E36. E90 328's aren't too hard to come by, and feels like a decent daily.

Haven't ever considered an Abarth, but I just may have to test drive one! It absolutely feels like something I'd never want to own, BUT, I can totally see how it'd be a blast, and very carefree.

Have also debated waiting until the spring and seeing how business is going and think about getting an E90 M3 to replace the E36. Afraid of maintenance, but I love the overall practicality/V8 sound idea. I'd get a 6MT of course.

The GT4 is a masterpiece. I even see used ones for $100k. Great car but i feel the novelty will wear off quickly especially when you see how well balanced it’s older brother, the 911, is.
