I'm going i8 route. This is a demo car I got for two weekends. Mine (also a demo car and real cheap) is coming in about two weeks.

Best is always subjective but they certainly are high on food chain and that's all that was meant to communicate.

So I was actually talking about a new R8, not a used one. Starts at $164k so not a big stretch from a GT3, GTS or even loaded C2S. Why go Porsche at all for the next step? It's basically a question of budget and garage. For the next level I'd think a Corvette GS or Z06 would fit the bill. They have the performance but perhaps not the feel or practicality (ex. No front axle lift). Maybe the next level up after that is a Porsche. Similar or better performance, exclusivity, build quality etc a finer experience. Then there is the R8, McLaren and getting into silly territory Ferrari. All of the above, plus more. But if money is no object, would you jump into a Ferrari straight up? There are many delights along the way... Maybe the M is occupying an ingrate position in the automotive hierarchy: superb choice for those who want a do-it-all car, but unexceptional by the higher standards of those who want more, and are prepared to split the requirements across a large garage.

For most people (myself included), the next step from the M4 (M3 for me) will be in the lower 100k range and work our way up from there as time progresses.

One thing for sure is Porsche, while expensive, age very well. For me, they have been extremely reliable. My 26 year old 964 has been relatively trouble free. I do baby it and over maintain it. The alternator finally gave out last week. Original paint still shines nicely.
I've had my 996tt for 8 years now, and it's had a couple issues....heater stuck on high, alternator, clutch accumulator, but overall fairly stable for a car I drive daily through Tahoe winters (last winter...600 inches +). The new Porsches are amazing, but are considerably larger than the older 911's. I only had one BMW...a 335xi. I leased it and found it well built, but not so much fun. I'm going to give the M4 a try with hopefully an ED lease next summer should the numbers improve. If not, I'll probably trade/sell the 996TT and purchase. |

I was the youngest attendant at the local Porsche driving event by at least 10 years (I'm 28).. much different demo than the local ///M car meets I've been to
However, a few of the younger Porsche guys at that drive event track their cars regularly.

The more expensive/exclusive the brand the older the clientele is. I can't wait to be able to get a Porsche 911 Turbo. That's my car goal. |

I 100% agree! It's hard enough getting into the Cayman after leg day lol I just hope I can still do it many, many years later.

My next logical step will probably be the 991.2. Not because it's the next tier up in terms of dollar value for a sports car, but because I've always loved 911's since I was a kid. I've gotten to a level career wise where can I can afford one. But now is not the time due to practicality. I have a young child so I need the 4-doors and trunk space. When he's out of the child seat, 911 will surely be on the radar.

Yup and I just have the standard sport seats! Would be worse with the Sport Plus seats or the LWBs of the GT4 but I do love it once I'm in

So you went from 981 to M3? I'm about to get back into an M4 after a year of owning the Boxster 981S. Love the 981S but I find myself not driving it as much as I thought I would. Without question the most fun car I've ever owned but probably the one I've driven the least. Getting golf clubs in trunk is getting to be a pain in the ass. |

The 981 was the best car I've ever owned. The experience is on a whole other level - the screaming F6, having a naturally aspirated engine, mid-engined handling...and the look of the thing. It was a wonderful machine. The F80 is the best BMW I've ever owned - and that's not a knock on the F80, but it's got a much wider "range" of daily use, and I only have room and budget for one car. So the F80 is a good choice for now. It's just not as emotional as an experience as the 981 was. And the 981 would be perfect for a 3rd garage bay. Hopefully again someday.

Will certainly miss the sound and amazing handling of the 981S but I am looking forward to getting back into a car with more utility and power. I really think the M3/M4 is the best sports/GT car out there that combines handling, utility, luxury, power and looks. |
