I look at the F8x M3/4 like sitting down to a great dinner that has wonderful presentation, tastes great....... but smells awful.

I have the money and I love the car but the reason why I'm hesitant on pulling the trigger on the F82 is it sounds awful.

I'm familiar with you from the 350z forums.. in 2007 I owned a VQHR with nismo catback / highflow cats and I loved the sound.. fast forward 9 years and I have a F82, and I can tell you the car with open valves isn't half as bad as I thought it'd be, I actually like the sound it makes when exhaust is warmed up. I don't think you'll be dissapointed! I hesitated for a long time debating between a 2013 comp e92 because of that damn S65 motor, but eventually decided the F82's power, looks, interior, mpg was the better choice for me.

The worst part about the sound is definitely cold start / cold exhausts.. too metallic / raspy.

What's that suppose to be... for a +100k car?!!

Seriously, the S55 is such a failure in the sound department, how are we suppose to compete against AMG with this!?

It is a fail in the sound department. I dont understand how it made it to production. the new 911 is out with a turbo engine, doesnt sound bad at all.

the difference with AMG is that they care about engine noise. when you go to their website theres a audio file of the engine.

You apparently had a 2015 M3. As I said in my post, the 2016s sound very different.

2016's just have different mufflers. Nothing changed in the motor. 95% of the same sound.

The quality of the M3 is nice but for what I want in a car, it falls short.

An F8x M car to me is a fast car, with a subjectively nice interior.

That's it.

A car like an M car should have a good sound. The WHOLE point of a car like an M/RS/AMG car is the noise, big power and presence. I just don't see how they went from 8K+ revving V10/V8's to puny and terrible sounding S55's.
Would you buy a Ferrari if it had a V6? Probably not.
Would you buy a fully electric AMG car with 750hp? Probably not.

The sound is what plays a BIG deal in the experience. Besides looking at the thing when it's parked, you are ACTIVELY listening to the car when you're driving it. I understand the EPA regulations and whatnot, but jeez.. Dodge has a 8.3 liter V10. Chevy has V8's in their Corvettes. SC'ed V8 in the Z06. Cadillac, same thing. Mercedes has twin turbo V8's. Jaguar have supercharged V8's. Ford now has a high revving V8. Audi has FI V8's/V10's.

Before ordering my GT350. I test drove a 15' Mustang GT with Performance Package. It had 435hp and was NOT faster than the M4.

Did it make me giddy taking it all the way to 7k RPM's (less than the M4) because of the noise (very quiet exhaust as well)?

Hell yeah!

All I'm saying is this.. the F8x has fucked up. Should have kept it V8 or at least FI V8.

The noise could have been better I agree. But the two principals is less weight, and more speed which will beat out sound. The M5 is on the same boat. By way the 488 has the same problem with the turbo V8 which does not come close to a NA 458. The 991S turbo S does zero to sixth to 2.6 seconds ........but the GT3 is more desirable. I agree with your thoughts, but reality is emissions, and forced induction is the only way to get power now. The NA motors are pushed to the limit. The M3 V8 without adding weight was maxed so last option is turbo. I'm not a turbo fan but the M4 convertible was the best in class for what I wanted. My GT3 is a keeper for sure revving to 9k is unreal they're a dying breed for sure.

People said the same about MPE, then it was AWE, and now it's AA
, IMO the problem is deeper then just exhaust. I have never seen a car getting so many complains about its sound, I'm sure if it was only exhaust related, the problem would have been fixed by now, it's not in BMW interest to do nothing.

That said, I'm sure AA sound better than stock, but it's probably still weak for a car in that price range, and that's even more true when speaking of the GTS.

Just let it off smoothly then, just like when we practiced quiet farts in high school classrooms. Smooth is fast, right?
