Going by the M3 GTS, this will be a $150k+ stripped out track monster on cup tires. Utterly horrible as a street car but as quick as a 911 GT3 on a track.

Will it be more expensive than a new GT3RS?

I'd be pleasantly surprised if the GTS is close to the 991 GT3; the RS is a whole new level of because racecar though.

The E92 M3 introduced the GTS model with a 4.4l v8, 6/4 pot brembos, special colour and wing.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M3#E92_M3_GTS

This is kinda a homage to the more famous CSL - which stands for "coupe sports light" - which the e92 m3 gts was not.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M3#M3_CSL

The e46 m3 csl was lighter, more powerful etc. it is an absolutely classic machine.

Let's hope the new f80/82 m3/m4 gts is lighter though
Yup you are correct.

And the E46 M3 GTR with the V8 motor was more along the lines of the CSL but with more advancements done to the engine.

They should do another CSL and make it 3,000lbs. That would be a real monster.

If it's premiering in Pebble Beach...does that mean the US will finally get a slice of the GTS pie?

the last M3 GTS was not even close to a GT3 in terms of lap times. I highly doubt this one will be anywhere near it either. My guess is it will be more like a 991 GTS, which would still be impressive.

there's only so much you can do with a 3-series platform; totally different ball game from a car built as a true sports car to begin with.

Ceramic brakes I understand. As expected, the water injection I understand. OLEDs brake lights I can sorta understand (assuming lighter? brighter and more energy efficient?). Laserlight on what's basically a race car? Sounds like extra bling to drive the cost up.

Also, would BMW make it so difficult to order GTS parts and retrofit on own car? <.<
Paranoid much? Don't they know there's such a thing called aftermarket?

Still would rather have a GTS for equal money. More rare and way cooler.

The GT3 (not the RS) needs to be a somewhat acceptable street car. Yes there are some compromises but it works perfectly well on poor tarmac, wet roads etc and provides some comforts like climate control and an infotainment system and tires that have at least some amount of useable tread.

The M4 GTS doesn't need to do any of that. They put barely legal semi slick tires on it, take all the comforts, insulation etc out of it and make a 500+ hp 3200 lb weapon. I'm fairly sure the tires alone will keep it competitive. This will be in the nice but not really for me category.

So I have a friend who's a noob, can someone explain to him exactly how this water injection stuff works, and why it is so "good".
Thanks.

Not a fan of wings!

BMW prides itself on being tech forward and cutting edge yet they crown thier track focused model with a big wing that looks like an after market thought from a cheap catalog?!?

Why can't they justify the huge premuim they will most likely charge and fit active aero like Ferrrari have and preserve the elegance of thier vehicle lines?

They have a wind tunnel, they have know how (including the La Ferrrari fellow) and they the tech competency so what are they wasting thier time with outdated T-wings?

IiRC, the M3 GTS was outpaced by the GT3RS, but was pretty much a match for the more streatable GT3.

Id challenge the "utterly horrible as a street car..." I had most of the oem gts components on my E92 (including the cage) and on the softest coilover setting it was more compliant to dumps and cracks on the road than a regular M3.
