People lamented the e46 sound and then they hated the fact that a V8 was introduced. Not for the sound but the shift from an inline six.

The performance difference from the E90 to now is staggering and I will conceded that the sound of a high revving NA V8 was special but the future is here and it's turbo. I haven't met a turbo that sounds as good as a V8 but, perhaps with a little time and innovation we will get there. In the meanwhile the exhaust note on the F80 is unique as were the E46 and the E90. All of these cars will have their place in history and frankly I'd take em all. Fart cans included.

Now for those of you who've heard the F80 in person does it suck as a stand alone sound or only in comparison to what we were all used to.

Well said my friend. I've been saying this since day one. The e46 sounds like complete shit. Near fact, but it has the strongest following.

My only hope is that the current turbo fad will fade much like it did back 25 years ago.

… The turbo era really began to flower in 1983, when Piquet won his second World Championship by two points — this time using a turbocharged BMW power plant. Turbochargers were banned from the 1989, leaving only a naturally aspirated 3.5 L engines.

Turbos are here to stay my friend. Nothing wrong with that, either. I prefer a turbo charged engine to N/A anyway. More power, better efficiency.

Seems that people are never happy with the M3 sounds. When it was E46, people complained about the RASP. Now the lawnmower thing.

This isn't anywhere close to really give a good picture of the true music the post-2014 F1 engines sounds like... It were angels voices to my ears... I have been watching Formula 1 live since they drove V10 (my GOD!!) but these last turbo years have destroyed a vital part of watching it live.

It's not ONLY the turbo though - the whole design is very low-reving compared to the V8s and especially the 20k rpm V10s!

NA V10 that is it! I was at the Montreal F1 GP the last year of the NA V10s....hard to describe the sounds, music to my ears....it is all about the senses....

I'm sure the video doesn't do the car justice, but it sounds more like a stock M4 than what I expected. I'm sure if they fit straight pipes and downpipes it would change everything...

So it would sound better with downpipes and straight pipes, and why are you posting a YouTube clip of a V8(M5)?

No way around it. The M4 sounds horrible. GTS or base. It's not that BMW engineers couldn't make it sound different, I think this is the sound they are going for. It just so happens that most people don't like it.

Too many people are saying who cares what it sounds like as long as it is brutally fast. Which it is. But one could argue that it doesn't matter what a car looks like as well.
As long as it's fast. If car A is faster than car B is the most important thing for bragging rights, then all the other subjective things tend to be less important to those individuals.

power and efficiency at the cost of engine character, throttle response, and added complexity.

My point is that the F10 M5 exhaust system was equally disappointing for us, but fitting a decent exhaust changed everything about the car and made it feel more sporty. No more active sound. I agree that the M4 is an awesome machine, but I do feel BMW should have taken the exhaust into consideration more.
