The issue I have with the S55 so far is the lack of injector over-run coupled with retarded ignition timing on standing revs and normal driving. Yes, the S55 has a over-run upon throttle lift when in boost (is a combination of retarded ignition timing, injector over-run and cam phasing) which is used to help keep the turbos spooled and re-use the boost pressure from the lack of diverted valve. What I'm talking about is different. I'm talking about a longer, more sustained injector over-run and ignition retard (usually in the -20 or more deg range) during all throttle lifts including standing revs. It would make the S55 pop and crackle a lot more. The N55/54 have this, to a certain extent and I think it sounds more aggressive. Listen to the new M2 samples and you'll see what I mean. I use to tune all my client's cars with these types of over-runs because they sound great and actually serve a purpose on throttle lift-off.
With that said, the twin turbo S55 is going to be raspier than a single turboed N55/54. Once you start seeing single turbo conversions on the S55, it will sound more to most people's likings. I actually don't mind the S55's rasp. I've said it before but I get compliments on my M4's exhaust tone all the time (running stock exhaust with VRSF downpipes). With flaps open, it is very aggressive, especially when lifting the throttle while in a good amount of boost (aka the farts you guys like to call it). |

P.S. I have no intention of going into the E9X forum to diss your ride.

It is unfortunate that sound is such a big deal when this car is so beautiful all around. But it will continue to be beaten like a dead horse by many, for a long time. |

As an M4 owner of almost 6-7 months. Enough was enough, I couldn't handle the sound. It's not so bad like some people say, but jesus christ.. I'm not exactly proud of it. A simple G35 with an exhaust sounds better honestly. A 335is sounds better. Any 911 sounds better. And don't get me started on the sounds of the M4 competitors (blows the F8x out of the water)
My F10 M5 that accompanied it in the garage, while no S85 V10 high pitched wail.. made the I6TT sound like a little girl, a whiny farty girl. So here I am, I already ordered a GT350 Shelby mustang with the actual tools to sound good. 8250RPM N/A Flat Plane Crank V8 with 526hp. I haven't even sat in the car yet and I can barely wait to just go listen to some good noise, been missing it ever since I got rid of my 11' E92 M3 with exhaust. |

Here's what I want to know: If the noise is due to the tuning that is designed to keep the turbine spooled up and that could be coded out as some have referenced, does the noise go away? And what are the drivability/response impacts of doing so? I'd really be interested in seeing some data logs that plot ignition, fueling and cam phasing during these events. |

The N54 has two turbochargers, and some think it sounds better than the S55 too (see posts in this very thread, for example).

You apparently had a 2015 M3. As I said in my post, the 2016s sound very different.
