On my car only seems to work if in neutral, brake only. Pushing in the clutch or moving the steering wheel start the car. Also the switch is opposite of what you might think. The light on means start/stop is off. When the light is off the system is active.

It only stops when it's in neutral *and* you release the clutch. The engine also needs to be warm. There may be some other prerequisites as well. I've found this to work very well because you don't shift to neutral when you anticipate short stops and hence the engine keeps running. When you anticipate longer stops it is natural to shift into neutral

On the e90 the car would only stop if conditions where ideal. If it was to hot out it wouldn't start/stop. Would make sense if it was the same on f80.

the manual describes quite clearly what parameters are required (or at least you'll find plenty of information in the tech.spec. document in another (sticky) thread).

Why would you want this feature on an M car? I never understood that.

Mine stops what seems to be at pretty inconsistent times but it does have to be neutral brake only. For examples stop and go traffic where I stop for less than 3 sec it shuts down, but coming to a stop light for over a minute it stays on. I would like it to be then other way around but I'm sure there is a reason.

Auto Stop/Start
If you turn it off it stays off until changed no matter how many starts. Something BMW got right.

Yup, works at stop, neutral, foot off the clutch. Cool that you can coast ahead without the motor restarting if you don't press the clutch - a little weird.
Why use this? I was trying to get my MPG over 20, and with the way I'm driving the car during break-in, I need everything I can get to break 20. Finally did it. And yes I"m following factory break-in procedures. Aggressively.

You can code that crap out btw so when you get your car coded, ask him to change the setting to allow you to stop the car in any conditions.

Now I got used to it a bit, and it works most of the time in regular traffic. If its too hot outside, or in stop and go, it usually does not engage. But I like the feature. It is very seamless and I don't understand why people are so negative about it.

It's also not going to shut off if you are bumping music pretty hard cause those subs suck up a lot of juice. Same with the AC on med-high. Something pretty cool I noticed is when you go to efficiency dynamics in your iDrive it will actually tell you why the car turned back on, or why it can't auto stop.

I actually find it useful, M car or not. I'm not flooring my M3 every second I drive it. Sometimes I like to put it in efficiency and cruise around light-footed and see what kinda MPG I can get. That's the beauty of a sports car, plenty of power when you want but it's also a good old cruiser too. Just my $0.02 anyways.

Auto Stop/Start
I tired it today, and it's good in some situations, like waiting at long lights. The good thing is you can have it on, and if traffic is creeping on and off, you can keep it off by just having the clutch in. I will use it more in the city as I get used to it.
