I mean what's so funny about having no turbo lag, it doesn't matter how many turbos BMW straps on a small engine,it'll still have turbo lag.

I don't understand what it is that you don't understand. This poll is titled "what would be your engine of choice".

Would I take a 5 liter variant of the S65 over a force-inducted V6 or I6?

Fuck yes....ALL.....DAY.....LONG.

Would you ? Why wouldn't you take a 6,2 L V8 then, huh ? Why isn't that one in the list ? Mercedes can lift such an engine in their C-class.
Why not a 8,3L V10 engine like in the Viper?

You would take that one also all day long over the 5L ?

My point being: this 5L option in the poll is totally irrelevant, as everybody knows there is absolutely zero chance of this happening.

If you don't understand that, well, add a V12 Ferrari-like engine to the list as well.

And the Boss 302 costs less than 50 grand.
So will you be getting the Boss then ?

Edit: Is this car available outside the US ? Not sure, but I think not. At least not in Europe.
Such large displacement engines are taxed way up here. Over a 5-year lifespan, you'd pay like an additional 35% of its purchase value in road-taxes, besides the standard 21% VAT.

Well...
Maybe you should get a 320d with the sport package/line. The new F10 M5 has a big displacement engine and is still available for the European market.
like AMG's I guess those cars aren't really designed to be fuel efficient or save you on taxes.

V8 with a big single like n55. copy the bms stage 2 boost/fuel curve. As an n54 owner, I love the torque of the twins but the hunt for boost leaks is no fun. More turbos, more places where leaks can hide, and less room to work in the engine compartment. The n55 drives very strong stock as well. Cant Imagine what the V8 with a similar set up might be like. Add a nice tune to it and keep it simple.

If not, go with the twin V8 I saw in the X5.0 I saw today.

Please, Don't degrade the M3 with a turbo!

I owned a 2008 335i (twin turbo, 6 MT) conv. but sold it after a few months because the turbo lag(/DBW lag?) rendered it useless in the point&squirt city driving I do. Yes, I know that eventually the I6 comes to life and off you go, but by that time the '90s-vintage Ford Ranger you were trying to get around is long gone. I traded an E36 M3 conv. for the car and found myself dearly missing the E36, with that turbine-smooth N52 engine that loved to pull (and no delay-inducing computer chips intervening between go pedal and throttle).

For fun, here's a list of modes of transportation with better throttle response than the 2008 335i:
My 1998 Isuzu Oasis (rebadged Honda Odyssey) Minivan
My 1988 Celica conv., its durability making it perfect for teaching our teens to drive
4hp Nissan outboard used on my sailboat dinghy (MUCH better throttle response)
My former DD, a 1991 Civic Si (a car that, like the E36 M3, seemed hard wired to the driver's brain), again, no annoying computer chips, just drive by cable!
2011 Renault Clio 1.5L turbodiesel (5 MT) I rented in France. That car was a ball to drive, its turbo working in unison with the diesel to produce zero lag. BMW needs to check out the Renault before saddling any more of its cars with laggy turbos.

My story, luckily, has a happy ending. I now have a 2008 M3 conv NA V8 that is a joy to drive. I guess I'll be hanging onto it for a long time if I want to keep driving a BMW, since the next gen M3 apparently will be cursed with a dreaded turbo (or three of them or whatever).

I don´t know why some people do think that there could be a V6.
Dr. Friedrich Nitschke said in a auto bild magazine that there will be no v6 in next generation M3.....if they go with 6 cylinders, they will release an inline.

Do you know anything about BMW history? A V6???

Thank you.
BMW should do Direct Injection, which usually add's 15-17% in power an fuel efficiency. Then you add brake regen, along with the start stop and any other new BMW tech and it should easily put out 450HP and get 18/22mpg.

Yeah, the mileage won't be as good as a turbo, but at least you'll have a REAL //M engine.
They should have then blown this engine and put it in the F10 M5.

.

You want to say a turbocharged M3 will be as fast as a Nissan GT-R and a 911 Turbo? One thing you missed is that all the cars you mentioned are AWD, whereas the M3 is RWD only.

For all those wanting a NA engine do not worry. I was told the next C AMG (C 55 AMG C205) will get a new NA 5,5l V8 based on the engine of the SLK 55 AMG producing close to 500 PS and about 600 Nm. It will 100 % sound better than the M3 F80. That is for sure.

No, I think you're missing my point, which is that there are supercars out there that have turbo-charged engines, so people should not worry about turbo charhing technology being a problem on itself.

Agreed - Porsche 911 GT2 as another example... Can't image that car would perform as well with a NA I6... (not knocking NA I6 configuration - just agreeing that turbocharging in and of itself cannot be categorically viewed as negative thing)...
