Good post. And not a bad prediction. I think we may see some wins for BMW's upcoming B* engine family as well.

And don't count BMW out of the larger displacement category just yet. There are rumors that they will downsize the V8 to 4L in its next iteration in order to be more consistent with the N74 6L V12 (with which it shares a bore center and bore size, but not stroke).

But this is best, 3.5L I6 and that sound when air going to engine.

yes 415 hp is dissapointing. and comparing production models with the cars from the video above, it's like comparing apples to oranges.... My favorite M3 is the E30, it had a great sound, and great performing car, but this new M3 has little to say when it comes to "Performance".

But the V8 soundtrack isn't MY favourite BMW M sound. It has a great idle sound (better than many of the 6cyl cars) but it just doesn't sound like it actually revs to 8400rpm when you hear it accelerating. Just check out the videos from the 'Ring and every E9X M3 sounds like they short shift (at least to me...). It's kinda like when you expect it to really come alive, there is a gearchange.

And the person who compared his E9X M3 with the sound of a Ferrari 458 must have heard a kit car with a V8 in it... The Ferrari V8 in the 458 has a flat crankshaft design (180 degree crank) just like F1 V8 engines has. Thats why a F1 V8 (like the Cosworth DFV or a new V8) does not sound like a V8 at all. Basically the 180 degree crank makes the engine act like two 4 cyl engines.

A E9X M3 does NOT sound like a Ferrari 458 in any way and it can't because their engines only thing in common is the V architecture of the block. The two very different crankshaft designs makes all the difference in the sound they make.
I agree that it does not sound like a Ferrari, but it does sound similar (at least to my ears), and more importantly, V8 engines have a great racing sound in general. I don't think the new M3 is going to be a bad car, I'm sure people are going to be hysterically happy with the new electric steering, etc.... but it is very disappointing that the new model only managed to output 1 HP over the previous M3 and 100 lbs of torque with turbos. I just don't know how they can sell this.... Mercedes, and Audi are producing V8's and V12's NA, great performing engines, and sound.

Europeans cars are NOT only 6 cylinders or are represented by it.... ask Mercedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Audi who by the way is going into NA engines, V8!!!!
Corvettes and camaros is not popular at all in europe

I didn't say "popular"....Fiat is popular. I said, (being spanish) that they love (tons of friends and family) Camaros, Corvettes, etc.... Also, Ford does really well in Europe, especially France, Spain, England and Germany.

Yeap wrong to compare, but still cars engine technology is not advaced very well if 40 years ago get same peak power whitout turbos(compare like what computers has 40years ago, there are maybe computer what can calculate simple 1+1=2)

IF the car will be light and fast and the sound can be improved somehow with an aftermarket exhaust I see a winner here

Also, I'll reserve judgement on the actual exhaust until I hear it in person. I never got how people ooh and ahh over the sound of an exhaust recorded on a small microphone and played back on computer speakers. Also, of course it'll have that pop because of the blow off valve. In fact it seems to sound a lot better than most other turbo'ed engines in that respect. The S63tu valve sounds downright sinister.
No need for me to add anything to this well written post

Let us all wait for the final version ... the ///M Division right now is testing every aspect of this new M3/M4 and if we reflect back into history in the end it always turned out better then the previous car (some people take exception to this I'm sure) for most of us anyway

So let us just wait and see ...

Can't say I like the sound but I doubt that will be the final tuning. BMW will spend many hours working on getting a sound that is more representative of the image they want to convey. They are famous for their obsession with the details.

Sounds more like your describing yourself.

As for the comparison to a mini-F10 M5 by another poster, I doubt it will feel too much like one given that it'll weigh close to 1,000lbs less. The M5 is a great car and I still miss mine (E60), but it's always had a noticeably different slant to the M3.

I agree, it'll have a different driving feel, but I think the M division will utilize the technologies and advancements on the F10 M5 platform for the M3/M4 platform, which will make for an amazing drivers car. The F80 M3 is going to surprise us all.

I test drove the new M5 the other day. It is better looking, more comfortable, more tech, and nicer in every way than my E63 M6. Except it was DULL to drive. NO sound in or outside

I drove away in my outdated M6 with Tubi exhausts and was grinning ear to ear.

I will be looking for another brand after my M6. I don't need more power. Its about the overall driving experience.

I'll be saving up for a Panamera GTS or 991 when it falls in my budget.

I'm still torn on this. I'm pretty sure the exterior will look better than the e90, but I can't get past how it'll sound just like an N54.

E46 M3 & E92 M are both great sounding cars. I'm sure the F80 will not disappoint as well. Don't be too quick to judge guys. Just enjoy what's coming.

I'm only judging what I'm hearing in the videos. If new videos arrive with an update then I will judge those.

LOL @ 00:43 and the AMG turbo whining away. The A45 AMG is absolutely insane.

F80 is sounding decent actually, although as with all turbos which rely mainly on exhaust for noise, you won't hear much action on approach, since turbo BMWs make almost no noise on rev-match downshifting. Load only. Always a disappointment for me, but performance wise it looks to be quick.

For you late model E90 M3 owners... best to hang on for a while.

the F80 M3 will be infinitely more practical than the e90 M3:

4 doors option
better fuel economy
turbo engine which will get more fun to drive in 90% of everyday driving
