Sport Auto review of the M3 and M4

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Received my copy of Sport Auto in the mail, here’s a few highlights of their review (some of it might be lost in translation, since neither German nor English are my first languages…):
  • No rpm, no sound and irritating turbo lag? By corner 9 and 11 all the concerns of the traditionalist have disappeared. Lightfooted the M3 storms through the Samsung corner and up the hill.

  • 5600, 6600, 7600rpm, the new engine doesn’t reach the high 8300rpm limit of the old V8. But for a turbo it revs astonishingly high. While the throttle response isn’t as fierce as it’s predecessor, it is surprisingly good for a turbo engine.

  • Turbo lag and torque dents/hollows (“dellen”) is impossible to find. “The linear power delivery from 1850 to 7300rpm was for us a very important aspect in order to achieve a good throttle pedal response/modulation. In the mid range we have 40% more torque than the predecessor” explains Norbert Siegl, head of engine development for the M3/M4.

  • To cope with g-foces over 1,2g the oil is drained from the front left and right hand corners of the oil sump by a separate oil return pump. The turbos are also actively drained for oil to avoid problems with oil being trapped inside the turbos in fast left hand corners.

  • And how does the new biturbo sound? Obviously the metallic hoarseness of the V8 is gone. The M3/M4 concert sounds darker and bassier. Obviously compared with the legendary induction sound of the E46 M3 CSL a turbo engine doesn’t stand a chance in emotional sound, but the engineers have unlocked great sounds from the new engine. Snorty naughty babbling on occasion, aggressive whisper under load or emotional exhaust cracks on throttle lift off. The exhaust system holds many acoustic surprises.

  • “A layman is not able to say from the sound whether there is a V10, V8 or a six cylinder engine. Actually it could also be a racey 4 cylinder”, says Friedrich Nitschke, head of M GmBH.

  • “There are still good prospects to further put the icing on the cake from this engine” he explains, a thinly veiled message indicating upcoming higher performance models of the M3/M4.

  • No panic is needed over the first e-steering from M-fans. In Sport Plus there is never any sense of synthetic feel from the steering. On the track, the steering shines just as on previous models with it’s precision.

  • Around the Nordschleife both the M3 and M4 have set nearly identical 7:50 times with various drivers. That’s the same as the E46 CSL with cup tires. The M3 and M4 manages to do the same on Super Sport tires.

  • That the new M3/4 has been developed on the Nürbrurgring is easily detectable on the topographically challenging track here in Spain. While other cars struggle with a unstable rear end over the crests and undulations, the new M3/4 convinces with it's balance and agility. There is no malice from the car driving on the limit

  • Where the LC in the E92 often allowed to much wheelspin, the new M3 and M4 launched with minimal wheelspin even at our first attempt.

  • The fear that the emotional aspects of the M3 would be lost in the turbo generation is unfounded.

  • We only have one wish/complaint for the new car: It should have had a boost gauge, in the style of the 2002 turbo model.
Oh, and the next issue, out 13th of June, will have the Supertest of the M3 (or M4) complete with Nürburgring lap time etc...

Thanks Boss.

7.50 is right in line with what many of us predicted. The future "ZCP" will be deep into 7.4x.

Tires for sure. As with any car Cup+ are worth a few seconds.

Thanks for sharing Boss Certainly backs up what a lot of the other reviews have said: sound is different (though still nice in their view) whilst you're giving up a smidgen of throttle response for a whole load more torque, and a better chassis with better handling. Overall, I'm happy with that deal!!
Some will no doubt disagree with that characterisation, but that's how I see it anyway.

I whole-heartly agree with the boost gauge comment.

They made the exhaust sound like it's gone mental. I like that. I like that a lot.

So the iDrive system tells HP and TP but not boost? That's a bummer, so are most people going to get an aftermarket gauge and mount it somewhere? That's what I had to do on my STi, always made me uncomfortable that the vacuum line has to be cut into.

Excellent review - and thanks for translating. If the original German is not as articulate as you were, I wouldn't worry at all about your English - you were far more articulate than most 'native speakers' are on this forum.

Yeah it was the first exhaust commentary that made me more excited to experience it whilst driving. It also made it appear like the design team spent more time focused not just on the tone/raspiness/volume but also on character & personality. Like: the turbos are going to create certain challenges, so it's put more energy behind giving it a distinct personality as you drive around.

I agree, it's a give and take as most of us expected it to be, it's not going to be "best of both worlds" but I think many of us will be ok with the trade-offs of the engine after we have adapted to the losses and gains. Steering remain my main concern.

The ~7.50min times SPORTAUTO quoted are times they are told them, what they also says in this article "reached by different test drivers on both cars M3 and M4" the article in the sister magazine AMS from the same autor quotes the same.

At first ... this time has nothing to do with an SPORTAUTO "Supertest" time by HvS ... the Supertest of the M4 is in the next month magazine (june 16th), so it seems clear, that at the time of print of the maiy issue even the author doesn´t know the Supertest times.

The Supertest is harder than factory testdrives ... HvS has at every car he tests only two rounds at the NOS ... the first to get an feeling of the car and the second to reach the Supertest time ... this conditions are for all test cars the same. HvS is an very experienced and fast driver and holder of the NOS serial cars lap record, but because of the hard conditions it could the case that his time is slower than the time an good test driver could reach who make hundreds of Rounds on the NOS.

Also the BMW DTM drivers have tested the M3/M4 on the NOS ... so nobody really knows if the rumored ~7.50min were one of their times!?

7:50 is E46 CSL territory which is incredible... a comp pack car should even be lower.

A few questions;

1) Is this a legit feull Nordschleife time? Or is this BTG or some other part track time?
2) What tires and what driver?
3) Any video or real proof?

I feel like this is a rehash of one thing someone somewhere said and there is nothing to back it up.

1) its the typical SPORTAUTO round, according to my information (nearly) an full round on an closed track (no tourifahrten) and ~10-15sec longer than BTG

2) Tyres: Michelin Sport Cup (Semityres) / Drive. HvS

3) no video but real proof !!!

It's not CSL "territory", it's the exact same time. Tire type is stated, the CSL was on it's stock cup tires, the F80 was on everyday stock Super Sports. So basically the F80 is a fair few seconds faster around the 'Ring than the CSL.

As for proof, hopefully there is a video but mostly for the enjoyment of seeing it as opposed to needing to double-check the stated time.

That's the only part that irritates me. How much time could be added for PSS? No one will be driving around on the street on Cups. Also, what tires was the E46 CSL Running back in 2002?
