The music was a nice ode to the music in the BMW movie "Star" featuring E39 M5, Clive Owen, and Madonna.

This is why I would probably foot the bill for at least a certified M car through a BMW dealer if I were going to buy used. At least then it would be backed by warranty.

A good break in procedure may have been *slightly* debatable after the first few hundred miles on the S65. But.. the S55? Turbo? Not smart.

all this break in procedure talk...do you guys REALLY THINK that the car comes out of the factory without being tested under harsh conditions? its just built in the assembly line and then immediately thrown in a truck for delivery? nothing run before? the engine not ran before installation after assembly? crazy....0 miles doesn't mean 0 miles.

Having said that, I've been fortunate to work with a handful of people who know way more about engines than I could ever hope to. In particular, one guy I worked with was an US Army engineer, working in a unit related to electrical power generation. They did a lot of work studying failure modes of engines (diesel and petrol) under different circumstances and at varying times in their lifecycle. Based on the research he did, his counsel to me was that most of what they tell you about break-in procedures is bullshit. The only aspect of break-in he found important was the varying out engine speed. The problem with a constant engine speed during break-in is metallurgical. The piston is rapidly interacting with the cylinder walls. Depending on the materials used (I don't remember what materials), varying engine speed can range from extremely important to moderately important. As the engine runs during break-in, the interaction between the piston, rings, and cylinder wall form important structures on the surface of the metals that are in contact. Anyway, that's one guy's opinion based on the research he conducted. Bottom line is that BMW offers a warranty that isolates you from a lot of risk. Following their break-in procedures is cheap insurance should you experience a failure.

I've only ever considered engines broken in after about 30k miles, but that's just been my experience buying used vs new, and never having leased - pretty subjective, in other words. I guess to me, 1k seems arbitrary, which is why I question it. Why not 800 miles? Why not 1500? What data points are BMW measuring? Fascinating nonetheless.
