Common etiquette for M3/M4 owners?

Hey guys,
So far I have encountered 2 M4 (over the last few months) near my area. Not sure if my behavior was appropriate, but when I usually see another fellow M3/M4 owner, my first response to wave or a thumbs up (I am driving my m4 as well and not another vehicle). Unfortunately, I have been getting either stares or a smirk. How are you guys holding up?

Got one dude in my complex, tried to give him thumbs up as he rolled by and he just looked at me like a typical douchebag. Alpine whites played out anyways.

They drive the same car as you doesn't mean they share the same passion as you.

Yup, so far all the f8x generation of M drivers I've come across don't seem to be enthusiast at all nor do they notice me high beam them or give them a thumbs up. It seems like they have an M cuz it was the best 3 series they could get (so why not right?) usually the e46 and e9x M drivers are the ones interested in my car or throwing me a thumbs up.

That's so strange you guys say that. I've had the same issue. The few people iv seen act like I'm a mental case. I'm roughly half the age of the type of people i see driving them so i assumed they don't like it that I'm in the same car as them. But clearly that's not the case.

a smirk is probably their version of thumbs up (maybe wanting to keep their hands driving...). for those who don't do anything, who cares, don't mind it. It's more likely you'll get a reaction from M car owner who actually did a mod of some kind, although I've had plenty of ppl drive up beside me to give me the thumbs up in stock cars. net, don't worry about it...

They're probably pissed someone else has one as they're used to at least initially being the only ones on the block with an F8x. I've had either ambivalence or thumbs up.

The best looks though I get from C63 owners. Priceless.

I try to wave if it's appropriate or if I see them in time. If they don't respond, I don't take offense. They probably just didn't see you...it's probably better that they keep their eyes on the road rather than trying to look inside someone else's car through up to 2 sets of tinted windows at up to 70-160 mph difference in speed (if they are going the opposite direction).

Interesting. I've successfully encountered the "Bro Wave" on a bunch of occasions. With other Bimmers but also with other nice cars. A wave is a way of saying; "If I were parking in a busy parking lot, I'd park beside you bro".

I've gotten the stare. Now I look for some sort of cosmetic mod (painted reflectors, emblems) before I will give the wave or subtle head bow. Generally those are fellow bimmerpost members.

Agreed, that's a great approach. I've gotten the death stare a couple times and unless the car is somewhat modded I'm going to lay low

When I give a thumbs up I generally receive one back. Goes for M3/4/5/6. Except for when I go into the LA area every other BMW is an M.

In my commute from Arlington to the Dulles Airport area, I see quite a few M-series cars, but I really haven't noticed any of them trying to communicate with me. Just as well, the traffic volume is fairly high, driver skills are woefully low, and I'd say at least 50% of all drivers are more focused on using their mobile device to watch videos, send texts, talk, or receive navigation instructions -- I'm always expecting a road disaster. In short, don't feel snubbed about a lack of contact from M-drivers on the road - they're just trying to get from one destination to another without getting tangled up with police or a simpleton driver.

There could be a million reasons. This being a highly probable one.

They also might have been admiring the car and never saw you wave at them. Don't let it bother you and keep on moving.

I thought New Yorkers don't like strangers saying hi to them?

I traveled to NY/NJ weekly for 9yrs. I stop saying hello to people after the first month.

This! We aren't driving Jeeps where you have to wave due to some bro law? You just drive the same car, you aren't friends or family as far as I know? Even when we ride motorcycles, we don't wave. We just share a hobby, big deal. It's not a brotherhood when you buy a bike either. It would be like waving to everyone that plays golf just because you share a hobby. Very odd and confusing practice. :

This is why I don't give a wave/thumbs up to people until they do it first lol.

I remember I saw a video where a guy gave someone a thumbs up and the guy chased him down and confronted him at the light. He thought he gave him the finger lol

Only the car guys will notice your car in nyc, everyone else will hate.
