I've been driving stick for 30 years, thanks. Nothing is going to change at this point.

Not normal, driven multitude of manuals from different brands, old and new, all go into first when going slow, no need to go to full stop. My manual M3 shifts into first too when going slow, no need to stop.

Just bought a vw golf r manual, also did not shift into first unless fully stopped, owner said it always done that from new. Bought the car and brought it to dealer as I believed synchro ring was not working. VW put a complete new gearbox in under warranty, now shifts into first without having to come to a complete stop.

Second, there's zero reason to suggest shifting into first is bad if rolling. Such a ridiculous statement that's an excuse for lack of skill.

Third, I've noticed that 1st, when cold, has been a little strange, but only when engaging from a stop and only after the vehicle has been running for about 5 min. Even then it's only once or twice before it's normal again. This experience is usually when leaving work in stop and go traffic in maybe 40 dev F weather.
strange how?

Just don't understand how starting in 2nd gear can be smoother than starting in 1st,you have to give lot more gas in 2nd. What do you do when u are in a slope , 2nd gear won't work

Actually, it does work. Yes, more gas than 1st, but hey, it works for me.

Can tell you this isn't the case when the transmission is cold.

Only after it's warmed up will it easily slip into 1st while rolling <5mph

Car going in for its 1,200 mile service on Thurs. Going to bring this up - I noticed that 2nd and 3rd are very notchy when the trans is cold (didn't get to 4th). Warmed up everything is fine. Hoping they will change the fluid and things will be better.

As noted, I never noticed this with my M2.

It's not normal , I have no issues putting in 1st even below10 mph when car is cold and also no issues for other gears too when tran is cold

Not sure about this trans, just saying.
Not sure rev matching alone helps. Double clutch rev matching definitely helps with 2nd to 1st.
