Quantifiable Spun Crank Hub Data? Choose your year and tune status.

With all of the ongoing discussion of spun crank hubs and seemingly a relatively moderate level of awareness of the issue, I thought we could perhaps benefit from a poll on the issue to get some data.

We're evaluating whether or not it's worth preemptively trying to stop this issue, or if the engine's chance of a failure is relatively small. It seems as though there may not be a clear-cut solution if one chooses to try to stop the potential failure.

Please note, the idea behind this is to limit results to those with OEM hubs only. Feel free to post up any conditions involving your failure, if you've had one.

Also to be considered, those who haven't had a failure, it's with the obvious caveat of 'so far'.

Thanks for starting this thread. It would be helpful to expand poll options to include individuals who track their cars. You should also consider stratifying those options to quantify frequency of track use in some way. I would imagine those tracking their car will return results disproportionately higher than those who do not irrespective of being tuned or not. Just a thought...

Thanks for this thread man. I got a 15 M4 with 12,800K miles on clock,, and tuned my car back in June 2018--kind of worried and wonder if worthwhile to go back to stock. Don't track, drive mostly conservative on the street with occasional spirited driving and pulls.

Maybe add in F80/82/83. Since the 80/83 are built at different facilities then the 82. Im an F83, tuned, no failure.

Yeah, I thought about adding in the aftermarket hubs as well, but it seemed like there'd be too many options to process. Also the DCT vs 6MT thing.

So this issue was resolved from year 2018?
P.S. What is the probability that ppl who were unlucky to have this happen to them and warranty denied, would still sit on these forums and vote? Pretty low.

This thread isn't going to definitively prove anything, but at least it's information to help us better understand things. I'd think that a lot of people with failures are going to be forced into getting the car repaired one way or another, so maybe they're still around.

Voted thanks. Stock tune for now, nice to see nobody with the stock tune has recorded a failure yet (by nobody I mean just the early days of this poll!).

I also always have Sport Plus on so no dumb kickdown(rev matching) with my 6MT. I hate that "feature"!

Does anyone know if the GTS DCT flash has any impact on this issue?

Bump, i wonder if this is starting to take shape with a ~6% failure rate? I know we all have follow up questions to this data, but i personally wish we could at least exclude the over-revs/money shots from the data

Definitely a good point. Interestingly, many people seem to suggest the issue is more common with DCT & 'kickdown'.

Exactly what I've read. Most of these failures are with DCT & kickdown.

I haven't read that at all, especially when you compare the % of these cars overall that are 6mt. and although this is not what i am basing anything on as the sample size is obviously too small, The only confirmed case i know of IRL was a jb4 15 m3 6mt, no overrevs, bmw replaced motor.
