Rust on the Rotors and Other Visual Offenses
So in another post I mention a SS M4 that has been sitting in the lot since late October early November. One of the visual offenses I immediately noticed was a thin layer of rust on the steel rotors. Talk about making an expensive car look cheap, just add a little rust. What aspect have you seen on the F8x that you were just a little disappointed about?

Truth. There's a tricked out 370z at the end of my street on 20s with beautiful huge slotted rotors that are rusted as steel plumbing. Makes me cringe every time I drive past it.

As other posts have mentioned, you will see rust on any steel rotor that sits awhile.
The fact the M3/M4 have large break and open spoke wheel designs makes it more noticible. You can't see that stuff on a hubcap covered Toyota Corolla riding on 15's |

Rust on calipers or the rotors?
OP mentioned calipers. But rust on rotors is what happens anytime water gets on a car that sits. Hell just a quick car wash will do it and it gets my wheels filthy again. If this is all there is to complain about, the car is just fine. |

It's not exactly rust per se....it's more oxidation. One drive and a tap of brakes amd it's gone...it's just oxidation from water amd sitting, you'll also get it washing your car amd letting it sit on a sunny day,, but one drive amd it's gone...happens on most cars.

@OP... the rust on the rotors is normal. My C7 had horrible rust on the hubs too but BMW doesn't seem to have that problem. The only thing you can do about the rust is drive the car a lot and not let it sit. ANY car with steel rotors that sits will develop rust. Period.

The stuff on the rotors is 100% normal
However, you asked for things about this car that lack quality? Easy, my paint job. Looks good, but noticeable Orange peel and it's very thin. Too thin for the money, especially considering that I paid extra |

It is a big industry issue (orange peel) but BMW seems to be worse than other luxury brands in my experience.

BMW has long touted how their paint process is protects the environment, but it seems at the expense of paint quality. I wonder is that 8k liquid silver metallic color is thicker and stronger. Last edited by OneRib; 12-28-2014 at 07:53 AM.. Reason: added comment on liquid silver |

Well my car never sits long enough for rust on the rotors but i do hate that every time i wash the rims i have to stick my hands so far thru them to get all the rusty water build up on the inside of the black rims off.

That's why I said per se... It goes away w a drive.. So while it's technically rust it's not like a rusty old bumper eating away at the car, which seems to be what the op is getting at...I had a feeling the literal police would be out in full force as soon as I wrote it.

More Visual Uproar
Aside from rust and oxidation semantics on the rotors another visual cue I cannot get passed is the F80 rear door to rear fender ligament. I am trying to see past it as an F80 would probably suit my family needs better, but the F82 lines are so much more elegant. The ligament blending is similar to how the convertible roof line blends poorly into the trunk. These annoyances are not about things like an unsecured arm rest that moves far too easily as it is about the style cues that seem to miss the mark just a bit. Regardless I am still very much looking forward to placing my order in April.

I completely understand where the OP is coming from, and to that point, I've never understood why BMW doesn't use cadmium plating, at least on the M cars.
Sure it won't prevent rust on the rotors surface, but that's never been an issue that can't be fixed with braking once or twice. It's the rust that builds up in the non-contact areas, that drives me crazy. Washing the wheels again from rust drips, after I've washed them already, is a pain. |
