this is freakin awesome. i knew people would eventually need to upgrade the charge air radiator to keep the IATs in check.

stupid question: because of the massive increase in the frontal area, will this have any effect on the main radiator itself (that sits behind it)? less area for airflow would mean cooler temps for the IAT, but increase in the main engine coolant temperature? and where does the DCT transmission oil cooler sit? behind it as well?

During our extensive testing in 95°F+ heat we saw zero effects of the larger heat exchanger on engine coolant temps. Yes, as the ColdFront™ replaces the stock cooler.

PS: not a stupid question!

Looks like great hardware at a great price. Question though: most of what I've read about the S55 cooling system says how robust it is. At what point in modding does this heat exchanger make sense?

The AWE Tuning F8X ColdFront™ Heat Exchanger's purpose is to cool the the turbos' intercooling circuit, it is not a radiator for the engine cooling circuit.

BMW designed the intercooling system around a given power level. When producing more HP and/or driving heavily (whether it's with a stock or modified F8X--HPD/ hot lap/ drag events/ constant spirited driving), there's a higher demand of the cooling system. With our ColdFront™ Heat Exchanger comes higher thermal capacity, and the ability to maintain IATs much more efficiently than factory (i.e. greatly extending the efficiency range over the stock exchanger).

To take it a step further, to cure any curiosities, the turbo/boost cooling circuit process, with the ColdFront™ Heat Exchanger in place, is as follows:
  • Air enters the intake and travels to the turbos.
  • Air gets compressed by the turbos, turns hot.
  • That hot air is sent to the top-mounted intercooler, which is cooled by water.
  • The water that cools the intercooler, leaves hot, and is then sent to the the ColdFront™ to cool off.
  • Once leaving the ColdFront™, the cooled water is cycled back up to the top-mounted intercooler via a pump to keep intake air temps (IATs) down over, and over, and over again!
Hope that provides a bit of clarity.

This is really late, and perhaps a little insufficient as I have not been able to drive the car yet to sense any difference.. but the build quality of this heat exchanger is amazing. The welds.. on point as always. Anyone who has the AWE exhaust on their F8X knows how perfect the welds are on the exhaust, it's no different than the ones on this heat exchanger.

The heat exchanger was packaged really well. I have no idea what the material is called of those gray air filled things lol... but it was so well packed together that it took some effort to get the heat exchanger out of the box itself lol.

The install was a piece of CAKE or so says my mechanic lol. Perfect fitment as always from AWE. I've attached a picture below of the stock heat exchanger and the AWE already installed. The difference is easily noticeable. I personally did not install it, but from what my mechanic told me, the instructions were on point in every single way. Out of all the parts that are on my car, and trust me, there are a lot... AWE is the only company that has always had a very thorough set of instructions written in PROPER english.

I only wish I had the heat exchanger on before doing the turbo upgrade because then the difference in whp could have been seen. Maybe someone else who manages to pick one of these up can do what I wasn't able to do. All in all.. while I have not been able to drive the car yet (tomorrow hopefully) I know that with this heat exchanger it's only going to benefit the PURE turbos As soon as the car is up and running after the 200 mile Dodson clutch break in, I will get some logs from me car and with another car that has the stock heat exchanger back to back to see the difference.. but honestly it might be a waste of time. If you guys look at the difference in size between the AWE and the stock, by natural physics the AWE will come out on top.

But so far so good
