Power Steering Oddity
Hi,
First of all let me say Hi! I'm new here having only purchased my M3 a couple of months ago - and yes it is Sakhir Orange. As I've been getting used to the car I've learnt more about it and recently noticed something for the first time. I don't know if its a problem or normal and has been doing it since purchase - hopefully you can all assist me in determining. I understand the EPAS steering system has the 3 modes and different weightings, I typically just leave it in the default sport. Recently I stopped at a set of lights and the cars stop start didn't trigger and I noticed the steering was a lot looser/lighter while the car was stationary with the engine running. There seems to be about an inch of movement left or right where the wheel almost has no resistance at all, it'll almost bounce back and forth between these two points. If you turn the wheel past this point it turns as normal but wherever you stop it then has an area of looseness - it doesn't have to be dead ahead. I don't think I've noticed this before because as soon as the engine cuts out with stop/start the steering wheel can't be moved, showing there is no slack in the physical connections/linkages etc. If you keep the engine running and start to move off, the steering weights up and gets the normal resistance back again as soon as you get to 2mph - it only happens when the car is stationary. So can someone test and tell me - if you start your car and before moving off try move the steering wheel, does it have this loose feeling? My wife's car is a Z4 with an EPAS system and its not the same so its got me thinking its not right. Cheers, Mike. |

The M3s that we test drove did this and my DD with EPS does this. If you are at a stoplight or at a stop the wheel has a bit of give built in for turns at slow speed so that you are not getting a workout trying to park. At speed it does not have the same give.
So, in my anecdotal experience, it seems normal.

Thanks Thescout13. Strange and a little off putting when you first notice it because there seems no reason for it. It’s made me feel better hearing you’ve experienced similar. Might try borrow the keys to a demo car at my local dealership to compare like for like myself. I’ll confirm back my findings soon.

Any update to this? Mine started doing this.. was not there before. And also high speed nervousness requiring a lot of very minor input to keep straight. Makes it tiring to drive

Every steering system does this, EPS or not.
When the car is stationary, it takes a lot of force to move the tires on the tarmac due them scrubbing off the surface. The initial looseness you feel is the sidewall of the tires deflecting before the contact patch starts resisting movement against the tarmac, like binding a spring. That is why the steering wheel springs back to the center. When the car is rolling, the contact patch is always in movement, which make steering effort much lighter. Anyone that has driven a non power steering vehicle will be able to relate to this. Conclusion: this is perfectly normal.
