F80 M3/F82 M4 Curb Weight debunked
Ok. Enough DIN, EU, unladen, and all this nonsense that has us all confused.
The E92 M3 Curb Weight on BMWUSA website: 3704lbs The E90 M3 Curb Weight on BMWUSA website: N/A The F32 335i Curb Weight on BMWUSA website: 3580lbs The F30 335i Curb Weight on BMWUSA website: 3545lbs So here is what we have on the F82 M4: Weight, unladen, to DIN/EU (lbs) 3300/3466 (3389/3554) IF, the number that will go in the BMWUSA website is 3300/3389lbs respectively then that means the car is NOT 176lbs lighter than its predecessor, more like 400lbs. So obviously, that's not the number since we clearly know this is the european weight/DIN. Scenario 1: 3466lbs If the number that goes on the BMWUSA website is 3466 then that's 238lbs lighter than its predecessor, not 176lbs. It's also 114lbs lighter than the F32 335i and 79lbs lighter than F30 335i. This number would actually be quite impressive. Scenario 2: 3554lbs So, let's say it's actually 3554lbs. That's 150lbs lighter than its predecessor, not 176lbs. It's also just 25lbs lighter than the F32 335i, and actually 9lbs heavier than an F30 335i sedan. Not too impressive. Scenario 2: 3528lbs Let's assume it's 176lbs lighter than its predecessor. That puts us at 3528lbs. That's 52lbs lighter than the F32 335i, and only 17lbs ligther than an F30 335i sedan. But we have seen no official figure mentioning this weight. SO... What is it? What is the official number BMW will have listed on the BMWUSA website? |

Look in the topic on this in the sticky. Covers interpretation of results listed in different countries as well as some info on the M4 itself.

If there is any nonsense it's the US curb weight. The new car is 176lbs lighter similarly equipped. Does that mean that the listed curb weight in the US will be 3528? No since we don't know what equipment BMW intend to include or exclude in that weight vs. what was reported on the E92. Also, will they still report the DCT or will they split and have two weights, one with MT and one with DCT? We don't know. The 80kg lighter is still the best measure if you don't want to use the European standards.

EU:
E92 m3 1655kg = 3 648lbs F82 m4 1572kg = 3 465lbs DIN: E92 m3 1578kg = 3478lbs (on scales,6MT, almost no fuel,almost standart option car) weighted mine F82 m4 1497kg = 3300lbs (6mt,standart option,dry) F82 m4 is ~80kg or ~176lbs lighter then e92 m3. end of debate |

It's also 114lbs lighter than the F32 335i and 79lbs lighter than F30 335i. This number would actually be quite impressive. If you had taken the time to read the sticky on weights you would have found out that the US E92 M3 curb weight is with 100% fuel and DCT. Do you REALLY believe that BMW has achieved a much larger weight loss and choose to leave 60lbs out of their weight "propaganda"??? To arrive at the 3704lbs/1681kg US weight (as is explained in the sticky):
So your 3704lbs vs 3466lbs is comparing apples to oranges. The E92 at 100% fuel, with DCT and options. The F8x with a MT6 and 90% fuel. It's all explained in the sticky though, so just read that and you will see how US weights is supposed to be calculated (but manufacturers use different standards for their advertised weights, leaving comparisons meaningless). |
