What am I missing with people who like soft tops? I prefer hard tops. Soft looks cheap to me. Just curious!

Intangibles: feel of the cloth, tradition, uniqueness, color tones
Real: more headroom, more trunk room, less weight, better gas mileage, faster car

Exactly.

I think the soft tops look cleaner and sportier. Plus you can play with the colors a bit more with different paint and top combinations.

The e93 looks to me like a wanna-be coupe with ugly lines all over the roof. There is no mistaking an e46 M3 Convertible.

I'm curious to see how many people that say they prefer soft tops have actually had one. My e46 vert. started making this crazy wind noise after 100 mph. When it happened, I always wished it was a hard top.

I am a current owner of an e46 ( I prefer the term) Ragtop. It hasn't seen 100 mph so I can't relate to the noise problem you mention.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the e93 a lot. But if it were not for the V8, I would not own it.

A standard soft top with an optional removable hardtop would be a nice setup.

It seems the roof is same size of e93 and the rear body grew out of control.
That's what makes it look better than the E93. The E93 looked like it was trying to look like a coupe, top-up, but the shape was off. Instead of people realizing it was a convertible, many (non-car enthusiast) people just thought it was an odd-shaped car. This looks more like a standard 'vert top where the top is smaller than the body and more obviously a convertible.

Not a fan of it at all. Looks too much like the IS for me. Wish it was more aggressive like the e93
Coming from an e93 non-M i feel like I would rather have my old car than this. Might just be me though..

F33/F83 is nothing like the IS Cabrio.
That is clearly evident when you look at it. Like the Previous E93 , the new 4er Cabrio is another result of engineers and designers collaborating to make sure the car retains a flat deck which all Cabrios intend to have that hump over the rear to accommodate the roof.

And A pillars on a BMW should be forward of the driver not directly over him/her which is not on the IS. A BMW Cabrio is always conceived as part of the strategy rather than just removing the roof as an afterthought.

The next Lexus Cabrio will be hopefully conceived from the beginning rather than being an afterthought to chase sales.

Thats a weird comment, of course they are supposed to look alike, it's the same car but convertible.lol, if some of the body lines look a bit different it's because that's what it takes to make it convertible.
E93 is the sexiest of the E90's.
hopefully this one will look as good in person.
Yes that's my opinion.. No you dont have to right to get all butthurt.

This was the E46 option. I never bought one for my car but if I did it again would get the hard top for winters (if just to tone down the roof squeaks.)

The guys who think this looks like a Lexus should really see one side-by-side for comparison. BMW from as far back as the E30 of the 80's has done a masterful job of keeping the belt line and deck lid of their convertibles low enough to give the driver and passengers some dignity. We've all seen other convertibles (the Lexus IS included) that have such a low seating position and such a high belt line and deck lid (an engineering cheat to accommodate the roof) that the driver is basically a disembodied head when driving with the top down.

In a BMW, good design and engineering allows a portion of the driver's shoulders and neck to be visible in addition to their heads. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it makes a HUGE difference aesthetically. Look for yourself. Compare drivers and passengers in a BMW convertible to other convertible types and you'll see what I mean.

Well I've had both (E46 and E93 M3) and can't stress enough what a HUGE difference the folding hardtop made to rigidity, noise abatement and climate control. I really LOVED that hardtop and lauded BMW for engineering a solution to solve the aforementioned problems.

I fully agree. I owned 3 different E46 M3 Convertibles and I now have a '13 E93 M3. There is no comparison between the 2 tops. BUT - there's a HUGE weight differential. Even though I like a lot of the positive aspects of the hardtop, I would glad choose a softtop over it due to the weight. There's no comparison in handling and road feel between the E46 M3 Convertible and the E93 M3 and I'm guessing some of the reason is the additional weight...

Here's to hoping for significant weight reduction for the M4 Convertible. It would be fantastic if the roof was CF but I'm guessing that just won't happen - at least not for the upcoming gen...

Eh. The more info/photos I see of the M4, the more I'm considering a used M6.
