Confused on ET for wheel purchase

So I am new to BMW and just bought my first M3 yesterday (everything stock). I am sure the nausea will subside from dumping down that much money on a car I wish I had made the change long before now. I absolutely love the car. The only thing I dont like is its a Alpine White with the Comp package with the Silver M666 Wheels. It looks ok but would look a lot better in black. With all this being said after reading through the forums it looks like I found the following

Stock wheels are : (I think)
Front - 20 x 8.5 ET20
Rear - 20 x 10 ET35 - 285 Tire

If I get new wheels I can get away with the following without spacers
Front - 20 x 9.5 ET20 - 255 Tire
Rear - 20 x 11 ET40 - 305 Tire

With all this being said I am shopping on elementwheels.com and tirerack.com and the like and its showing the ET40 does not fit or is not offered. (or does not have their seal of approval at any rate) I have seen countless pictures on this site that say they fit. My question is are these sites saying they dont fit because they might rub with that ET or are they not comfortable selling anything other than stock offsets?

I figured you guys had a ton of experience here and might as well tap into that knowledge. Is there a better place to shop for wheels and not break the bank?

Stock wheels are
F: 9x20 ET:29 (265/30/20)
R: 10x20 ET:40 (285/30/20)

If you're running
Front - 20 x 9.5 ET20 - Go with a 265/30/20
Rear - 20 x 11 ET40 - Go with a 295/30/20

You can get away with certain 305s but not all. 305/25/20 Will probably fit and some 305/30/20 will fit. But wider tires like 305/30/20 PSS on 20x11 ET 40 rubs the fender with -2.2 camber (already tried)

James knows his stuff when it comes to wheel offsets and tires.

I have three sets of wheels with different width/offset combinations. I have come to the conclusion that 11" is not the best size unless you are running a 10" front. The best and safest (and proportional) size is 20x9.5 front and 20x10.5 rear with a 265x30 and 295x30.

The 11" just makes for weird combination with a 9.5" front. The tires either stretched or not tall enough depending on what you choose.

agree with all of that above. plus this: I have 763m wheel set 9x19 +29/10x20 +40 and use MPS4S 265/35:19 & 285/30:20, all street, no track, and I couldn't be happier.

Awesome, Ok cool I will stay way from the 11s. What ET should I be looking for for 10.5. This link is a good example of what I am running into. When I select my wheels I haven't found anything that has the stock offset. Its close but I dont know what close will look like on my car. It has check marks next to "Fits" but what does that look like with those offsets?

Looking around on element wheels website and even tirerack the offsets seem a bit off. on 10s I can only seem to find an offset of 35 and 10.5 I can find and et of 38. Would that make them stick out?

Maybe I can help you out? I've ran a few wheel sets in many different widths and offset combinations

For the most part, people usually run 19x9.5 +20 - 265/35/19 | 19x11 +40 305/30/19, without any issue. Here is a pic of the exact fitment on my F80 M3:

This set up is very flush, and will not rub... Unless the car is slammed (lowered 1.3" or more)

PM me if you need help finding wheels, I am a vendor for many brands.

Many US wheels have an offset of 34 at the rear with 10.5. So with 20' it's 295/30 maximum, no spacers.

So in this case (see picture) what happens if I am running 20s @ 10.5 with a ET 35 vs the 34 using a 295 tire? I am not sure which way the wheel will move in or out with the offset. The fear being they would be sticking out the side or rub when I hit a bump.

Also, Justin, I will PM you. If I move to 19s do I need to change any thing speedometer wise? I know when I went from 19 to 20s on my mustang I had to have the speedometer adjusted.

I think what I am learning here, and I could be wrong, is I need to order wheels with a custom offset vs just buying something off the shelf?

The wheel with ET35 is 1mm more "in", that's fine. It'd be close on the outside if you'd take a wheel with less offset, i.e. the stock wheels are ET40 with a width of 10.

Hey guys thank you so much for the help.

Just to make sure i am on the same page is this correct?

If I go with with 20s and a 9.0/10.5
Front - 20 x 9.0 ET25 or ET30? - Is there a minimum you want to run as I see stock is 29? Would 25 stick out the side on a stock setup
Front - 20 x 9.5 ET 20 (minimum) - Go with a 265/30/20 Tire
Rear - 20 x 10.5 ET34 (minimum) - Go with a 285 or 295/30/20 Tire

Is there any advantage to running 19s? The way I am reading the above no issues running 19s and a 305 rear tire but 20s only certain 305s will fit correct?

Thanks

The rear is imho too less with ET27... means the wheel stucks to far out. US wheels often have a ET34 for the F8x. I used a ET30 ATS Racelight but with a 10 inch width and that worked.

OP, you are 100% fine and fitment listed will not be an issue at all. I’ve ran the out of box HRE FF04 Rear spec 20x11 et43 With Michelin PSS 295/30/20 in the past.Car is lowered on Eibach pro kit v2. Shown below:

Also clears the new Michelin PS4S with a 305/25/20 with a 5mm spacer (43-5=Et38).
