I drove the new m550i back to back with a 2016 M5 and an f80 (and I've owned two, but not for over a year).
M5 - surprised how many times I felt like I was going to break a wheel. Sounds like a beast. Can't put power down until getting up to speed then it takes off. Noisy inside which is part of the drama. Legendary nameplate. Interior is nice but looks dated compared to the F80 and especially the m550i. M550i - quiet. Amazingly so compared to the others. Smooth power delivery and pleasantly, satisfyingly fast. Quiet cabin, piped in sounding exhaust but it sounds good from outside too. Beautiful interior. Lacks the "M sauce" drama, but is all you need for a street car and more. M3. My favorite all-rounder, still. By far the most enjoyable to drive out of these three but the gas pedal felt a little soft and the engine a little subdued. Same issue (only one, really) I had when I sold the car. You can find a lot of used M5s now for $80k ish.. also take a peak at an Audi S6. I feel like it has more special sauce than the MXxxxxxxxxi cars, but it's still well below the M line, or course. V8 and nice space but not as updates inside. The new S7 is around the corner and is another one I like around that price. Macan GTS or Turbo if you don't mind the small suv vibe. Those are what I like around that price!

I feel like I need to go test drive one but I like my lil M4 On paper and from reviews, it looks like an amazing car plus it looks more athletic and less boat-line than last gen |

My point is BMW isn't gonna just take a lease back because someone wants to get out early. |

Agreed. You would need to be close to lease end. I could be wrong but I don't think BMW allows lease pull ahead on ///M cars.

The f10 and G20 are far more luxurious, quiet, and smooth driving than the F8x. But then again, it kind of goes like this in terms of sports car vs. luxo cruiser: F80....F30..G20 m550i...F10..G20 I'd put the S6 as between the F30 and G20 m550i - it drives a tad smaller, a tad tighter, a tad more connected, yet while still putting forth the luxo feel of the mid-level premium sedan. That being said, it's now an aged platform so if you put the latest tech/capabilities at the highest level it may not be the car for you. Lastly, because I'm obviously a fan of the S6 in this segment, Audi's dual clutch trans + the S6 sports exhaust is absolutely fantastic. Wouldn't want to own one out of warranty, ,but darn if it ain't nice.

Drove it at a BMW Track event. It was surprisingly fun to drive and very quick. Had a great throaty sound also. I would definitely go for it if I was in the market for a 5-series and didn't want the M5.

Nice car. Driven it. Handles Well for it’s size. Doesn’t have many ///M characteristcs and drivetrain ‘thuds’ but it’s a nice kit. Deceivingly quick because it’s quietER. You absolutely must get the digital dynamic instrument cluster. White or silver rear fully debadged. Maybe the only other con is.. can you really have fun with x drive in the south east?

I was under the assumption that you can't pull ahead on M cars. Were you able to do it?

Thinking of trading
I'm thinking seriously about swapping my 2016 M3 with competition package 12K miles DCT on a 2019 M550 xdrive. Not only would I be able to drive in the Colorado winter but it just seems like a good blend of luxury and performance. anybody had both that could offer advice? I know the 550 is very fast but I am a little worried about how much handling I would give up.

M550 xdrive is a really sweet car, but seems to me as a totally different car vs the M3. I am in TX so don't have to worry about snow much, but I hear lots of forum members who put great set of snows on their F8X and the car handles great...

Haven't driven the M550i, but I recently got an 2018 S4 for my wife's DD. Make sure you test drive the RS5 sport back and the A6/S6 before you buy. I think Audi is killing it these days when it comes to fun but comfortable daily drivers. Their latest gen cars have leapfrogged BMW's standard and m-performance models in almost every way. I'd buy the equivalent Audi over any non-M model any day of the week.

The 550i is the more comfort/luxury car for sure and rides much smoother than your M car. It's got plenty of power.
Not a real //M car as you said but if you don't feel you need it anymore and you want something more comfortable with more luxuries, no real reason not to consider a M550i. Personally though I find the car too soft for a V8, not much engine/exhaust noise and it is much larger than the F80 so you definitely can feel it's a larger car. I value performance over luxury so obviously the F80 for me but that's not taking anything away from the M550i. Apples and oranges. It's a solid choice if you want to get into something more spacious and more lux oriented. For me though once you go //M you can never go back to a regular BMW. It would have to be an M5 Competition or upcoming M8 if I was going to step up in the BMW brand. Too spoiled now Last edited by IDBGOD; 10-02-2018 at 03:45 PM.. |

I drove one at autocross back to back with my E60 M5. The M5 (or any M car) is definitely rawer and a few % more fun, but for a daily it's tough to argue against the M550i. The big boat still was decent fun at that autocross.

For street duty the M550 looked like a very interesting car at launch, then the reviews came in saying that the car i much more luxury than sport and feels too soft to be a proper driver’s car. That cooled my interest to the freezing point but I’m still doing searches now and then to see if someone has put coilovers on one and if it uncorks hidden potential as a great luxury sport sedan or if it ruins it. I’ve seen that KW has announced KW V3s for it. I guess there is also a chance the lci will bring a better factory suspension option.
