The E92 M3 and the last gen M6 were significantly different in terms of size and the amount of space they take up on the road. If this upcoming M4 is only a tad bit smaller, then I won't be buying one.

I like the way the 6 series looks, but it's just so big and bulky! I saw a few new ones around the highway and they just look so massive. I want the new 4 series/M4 to be smaller, it'll inevitably keep the weight low and what not.
Maybe the best bet will be the M2 (if they make it)? It seems the 3/4 isn't getting any smaller anytime soon...

I love the 1M because it reminds me so much (looks and size wise) of the E46 M3, which is my favorite BMW of all time.

I'm sure the M4 will be a rocket, but if you want smaller and more nimble (as I do) then you will probably have to hope for the M2...I just hope they make enough this time so that more people can get a hold of one...

BIMMERPOST Note: Although we'd love for this to come true, we're skeptical of this claim however, as this would amount to over 400 pounds shaved off the current M3 sedan's curb weight. Furthermore, the roof would certainly have to be carbon fiber (not aluminum as claimed) and we've yet to spy carbon ceramic brakes in any of the M3 or M4 prototypes (full spy pics compilation). This much weight reduction will be difficult to achieve without extensive use of carbon fiber construction, which we have reported that the F80 M3 and F82 M4 will not be featuring.
Fully agree with the Note. This much weight savings is unlikely simply because it would be too expensive.

"Striving" should technically be "have strived"!

The funny thing is that all of this is pretty well already decided. The weight of the production M4 is known quite precisely at this point and has been for some time. The goals, specification and engineering is all done. It just will be leaked to us slowly over time.

Using the excuse of the premium they ask for the 6 series over the 5 series to justify the 4 series over 3 series price increase is also ridiculous. Even though they share almost everything mechanically, the 6 series has always been a model on its own, more than a 5 series coupe. More so when the beautiful E24 came out.

I'm really not too fond of many of the decisions recently made by BMW.

Beautiful render BTW

Seems Autocar agree with me that the "M4" (ugh) will be only a few months after the M3 ie. closer to 18 months away than 30.

I so disagree w/ this sentiment, but I have held back commenting until I read your post for, IMO, you have come at this from a very different angle from the typical M3 aficionado.

First, we are the customers, who have been committed buyers of the marque. Accordingly the marque owes us respect as regards the heritage.

Second, the first M3 was a 2-door. And so it should remain. A 911 is a 911 is a 911. Porsche knows better than to screw up a classic's heritage.

When Porsche added the 4-dr P-car at least they added it under a different model.

Third, if anything, BMW AG should have given the 1st 4-dr M3 a different moniker (M2?), and kept M3 for the 2-dr.

It's a totally egregious marketing exercise that the 'bean counters' & marketing gurus came up with as a product line-up:

M3 to RS4
M4 to RS5
M5 to RS6

and use a similar pricing model, ie squeeze some incremental margins from the punters who won't give a sh&t about the M3 to M4 change and the inherent flouting of a proud heritage. Respect? Riiiiiiggghht .. wish the M4 product profile had asked some of their customers.

In sum: I guess my next car's a 911 (been buying Bimmers since 80s).

Were there any issues with the first model year of the current M3 that would make it worth waiting for the second year of this variation? I will be ready for a new car by the end of 2014 but I could wait till 2015 if it makes sense.

Nope, the 08s were extremely reliable. BMW did an amazing job considering the trans was their first crack at DCT. One or two software updates, but no more than an hr or two at the dealer for that.

Only annoyance for 08 drivers was that the disc navi changed to the hard drive version for MY09, but this was an across the board BMW 09 change so I wouldn't expect it to happen again on the next generation M3.

I'll be getting a first MY car when the next one comes, and I'm not at all concerned about it.

I wish it were that easy. I think I have had 3 software updates but 2 had anything to do with DCT. On 2 of those three visits the uploads failed after many hours of sitting during the 1st upload attempt. Thus on those two visits I was out my car (with some crappy loaner) for about 48 hours.

Overall I have been happy with my first model year 08 M3 as well. I generally prefer to have a new model earlier when there is more novelty and excitement. With most cars you have a pretty nice warranty which will take care of the vast majority of issues, small or large.

Yikes. That's a fair bit longer than hour for sure. But other than the timescale I'm right that it was only software updates right? If so, that's pretty darn good for an all new high perf vehicle. As you say, it's more inconvenience than anything else. The only thing I'd go crazy about would be something that left me stranded, my friend with an 06 M5 had the red cog of death.

As usual, thanks for the informative, and firsthand, post.
