Issues getting license plates from dealership

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but I'll post this here.

Going to give short story, but bough car in December, its April and still don't have license plates. Dealership is not helping and I keep getting the run around.

Recently my temporary tags expired and I'm now having trouble getting new ones of those.

One, am I allowed to post this dealer info here so I can at least warn people to stay away, and hopefully deny them business as I'm growing increasingly frustrated. I feel like they are either incompetent or just negligent.

Two, do I have any legal case for civil damages(is it worth talking to a lawyer) esp now that I cannot legally drive my car without proper tags and registration?

I would appreciate any input.

Sincerely,
Very Frustrated M4 owner.

Contact the genius at the dealership and ask to talk to Vehicle Administrator or Title Manager, this dept work directly with DMV. Don't go to Finance Manager, he/she is just a layer of another sales person.

Not sure if you can directly contact local DMV and see if the car with your VIN number is in the queue for new license, as well.

I hope there is major screw up here by dealer.

It took me 4 months to get my tags.
Bought my car out of state.
They made a ton of mistakes.

It only took 2 or so days for the NY DMV to process my plates. Car was bought out of state in NJ.

The majority of the time I spent waiting was because of the dealer (whether they were actually working on it or just looking at it, I don't know).

Finally got through to a competent manager, now he is saying I have to sign a form for. Reapplication for license plates as my original ones got lost. Not sure why they didn't tell me about this back in January, but it appears there title clerk is lazy or incompetent and also my sales guy left right after I bought it so no one took responsibility.

He told me I can drive with expired temp license plates b/c my car is registered and it shouldn't be a problem if I get pulled over as my car will be registered in the system.

So will see how this saga unfolds and hopefully ends. Luckily this dealership is out of town and I won't ever be returning or dealing with them again after this fiasco.

I'm cringing at the idea of this happening to me. I bought in NJ live in NY... it's only been 11 days, but I want plates asap...need them so I can get inspection sticker, and then tint

Call them to check in. My dealership didn't contact the NY DMV until like the 17th day and I picked up my plates on the 20th day aka the day the temp tags expired (I wasn't too happy about that)

Call the DMV in the state where you purchased the vehicle for assistance with “pushing” the dealer to take action on getting this issue resolved. I had a similar problem 6 months ago with a new Porsche purchase in Texas. Found out that other new car purchasers from the same dealer were experiencing the same issue. DMV and local county district atty escalation quickly resolved the issue within 48 hours.

Bought my car out of state, but had plates within 30 days.

Where'd you buy your car? I'd contact the dealership manager and if that doesn't work, the office of the state attorney general. (You gave them the cost of the new plate and they didn't get it for you--fraud or, at least, conversion.) You might look into what department in that state licenses auto dealers and make a complaint to them.

Thanks for the feedback. Think I finally got the right managers attention. I will play nice for a little bit, as things seem to be moving forward, but will have no problems escalating things if necessary.

Similar story happened to me. After 45 days of running on temporary tags, I called and talked with the title manager. Plates usually take less than two weeks. She said to give it a few more days. After two days, I called back and she simply refiled the paperwork and I had plates three days later. The title manager said the title agency was backlogged so she put a Rush on it.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Sounds like the old game of collecting tax money, not paying it to the state and using that cash as float.

Did you pay Title, License and Registration fee to Dealer?

If so, you have legal recourse.

It sounds like things are moving along now, otherwise I'd say if it is a dealer near you, ask for a loaner car until it is resolved. If they refuse and you then rent a car I suspect you may have a decent case for them to re-reimburse the rental fees in addition to the fees you have already paid to extend the temp tags and maybe something for the time it's cost you to deal with this.

Every state is different I know, but this all seems ancient to me. In my state, Massachusetts, every new car dealer has a direct link to the RMV and a safe with a stock of new license plates. Before any new car is delivered, all they do is grab the next set of plates from their stock, register the car online and print out a registration form. It's all done before a car is delivered. They can also move and re-register plates from your old car to your new one. It's been like that for years here.

Thats how it is in Michigan. I bought my car with the new plate the same day. Asked me if I wanted to use my old plate or a new one.

Most states do this with IN State purchases. The problem arises when you by a car OUT of state , cause the dealer won't have plates for another state and they then give you an "In Transit" temp plate. I have always gotten plates the same day when I buy in New York State where I reside.

Bought from NJ and live in FL. I got my plate in less than 2 weeks - definitely was shocked. Took 2 months the last time I bought out of state though.

Can you tell me who the title manager would be out of this group? I called up, and specifically asked for the title manager, and I got my CA I told him it's been 2 weeks, my temp gonna expire, and i want my NY tags ASAP especially so I can get tint ASAP... I didn't get any where. Feel like I'm getting the run around
