Extended Warranty and Maintenance Plan?

I always mention this in these threads... (and I really don't know why... just bored, I guess.)

You do not have to buy an extended warranty until the original factory one expires. You can keep the car until before the 4yr/50k expiration, then decide if you want to buy one or trade the car in. It does not get more expensive the longer you wait. The only reason to get it now is that you can roll it into the car payments.

The price of a factory extended warranty is negotiable. Do not pay retail.

Also, if you have an extended warranty and sell the car (or total it) before your extended warranty expires, you can get a prorated refund.

And finally, extended warranty is NOT the same as extended maintenance... a mistake I see here all the time.

If you wait until 1 day or 1 mile past the 4yr/50k, you are only eligible for a powertrain extended.

A word about maintenance packages...

5 oil changes using BMW 5w30 oil and 5 oil filters will cost $300 in parts

A brake job using new OEM rotors, pads, and retaining screws/clips will cost $850 in parts (These are past parts costs, these rotors look a bit fancier to be fair)

A spark plug job will cost $45-75 in parts (we'll see what plugs the n55 uses)

Brake fluid is $10-20 for enough to do a total system flush of a high quality fluid

5 new wiper inserts for both sides = $30

These all assume OEM parts bought from a wholesaler, of which there are plenty.

So for $1,250 in parts costs for another 50k miles of maintenance coverage, and about 14 hours worth of maintenance service cost, how much are you willing to pay as part of a pre-paid package including an service experience and loaner car?

Just wanted to put that out there.

Lastly, an extended BMW warranty is worth MORE for a first-year buyer than it is for a final-year buyer of a given M model.

The first year buyer is going to have a higher likelihood of issues and those issues are going to be less well known and repeatedly fixed by independent shops at the time they begin arising.

By comparison, a final-model-year buyer is more likely to have at their disposal a number of independent shops with experience fixing that model and addressing common problems, and parts prices will have come down at that point as well for the model.

Just something to consider. I'm waiting until I get close to 50k miles to make my decision.

My extended on my E92 got me a free engine but up until that point it was a complete waste of money and it was like $4800 or something? With 3 weeks left on the clock, my engine took a sh!t and I finally got value out of it. Very tough call for anyone considering laying out the funds.

I usually get rid of the car before the warranty is up. But if it doesnt sell Ill probably take it to an independent shop

Mine was for 7 year/100k miles. I negotiated for a while (MSRP is roughly 8k on the extended warranty)

Yeah but the first 4yr/50k was already covered, no? So the net is only 3yrs more to which you can drive to 100K or the wheels come off.

With my 335, I went for the extended service plan, but not the extended warranty.

The two are separate and cover completely different things, though they seem to be confused or combined in the posts above.

For oil changes, brakes (pads and rotors), etc. the service plan paid for itself (though I got it at a discount compared to what most dealerships charged).

I spent some money on other things that would have likely been covered in the other warranty extension, but still less than that would have cost.

The crate engine woulda been somewhere around $15k I'm sure? Not to mention what 20hrs of labor on top of that goes for to drop and reinstall a new mill. I paid a $50 deductible.

OMG. my purchases of extended warranties never paid off, buy man-! wtf happened that you needed a new engine?

I would be pretty pissed if I had to pay that out of pocket! Probably would have sold the car. Did it appear on your carfax?

No car fax yet. After getting a fresh mill, they also replaced the engine mounts so I had them install new hoses, clamps, O2 sensors, expansion canister and a few other worn bits. Now the Mrs has a good, honest car to drive for a long time. Even had the diff serviced while it was on the rack. Was going to sell when I got my F8X but instead handed it down because I'd never get the value of a new engine if I sold the car outright.

I'm with you re your #10 post, well worth the extended maintenance warranty, especially when we are talking M car coverage. And yes, never pay retail!
