M3 fuel consumption - getting better
Now I've done over 5K miles I'm now seeing some reasonable fuel consumption on a run. I dont go on that many long runs (I've done 5K in 11 months!)
I've said in the past that "you'll never see 300 miles from a tank" and "it'll never do better than 30mpg". Well on a trip last weekend I was proved wrong. It's obviously got a lot better since the miles have gone on. Here, I've driven from North Wilts to the Midlands via the Fosse Way, all A roads, no motorways, 4 up in the car and simply sticking the the speed limits. Normal driving, no crazy overtaking and its surprising what fuel consumption you can get. The fuel is Shell vpower, I've never put anything else in, ever. This was on the way up there........ 79 miles at 33.4mpg This is when I returned home. I did have a mad blast for about 20 miles in Sport at one point. So 28.2mpg overall on the day. This was also some town driving within the 222 miles. Ok, so this is not new news for those of you that of owned M3/M4's for a while, but the point of this thread is to: a) let anyone know who doesn't yet own an M3/M4, they can be reasonably economical if you need them to be. b) rather obviously, the more miles you put on the clock the better it will get - so good news to those with newish M3/4's.

It IS possible Andy. Even I've ventured north of 30mpg a few times (hard to believe as it may be)!
These days though I hardly use the car for long journeys so my average has gone down to about 21ish.

I regularly get over 350miles and 30+ mpg but a vast majority of my driving is motorway.
Even saw 420 miles out a tank once with 95% motorway. Can't complain for a car like this. Mid to high 20's is the norm for me mixed driving.

Nar, I thought that when I first got mine. Never saw more than 30mpg under any conditions. Seems its much better now its got a few miles under the belt. Also, the pick-up seems to be a bit better for the last few fill ups. Now either its Shell's new vpower or its just loosening up. I favour the latter, but its a bit more pokier now than when I first got it. Just bear with it John and put a few miles on, an even better car lies beneath.

Was thinking the same thing. I didn't purchase my F80 for MPG...

I bought my car at 9,300 miles and it's now covered 11,600 miles. My long term average is 29.1 mpg but this includes an 800 mile holiday trip where I drove in Efficent and averaged 33 mpg for that trip. Compared to my E60 M5 it's very good on fuel.

I have done 2000miles now 26/27 MPG and for the sort of high speed driving I do that's good. I never hang around.

Personally I am delighted you are back in the fold and enjoying your car and life is too short. Just promise me, when you get bored of your current car, buy something more docile, please don't start down the same line again. Will win you no respect from me. Annoying, as you seem a nice chap with best intentions.

Like you and I say, life is short "U' turns are allowed. EDIT: just to add to my "original comment", all decent Diesel cars and many low cost cars in general will get to 155 MPH, the difference is how quickley, I missed the go.
