Easy to get high MPG figures on the motorway in the M3/M4. I managed this on my usual Leeds commute. All pretty much 70 with a very short average 50.

In town I can still crack 30 if the traffic isn't heavy.

So after 18k miles the OBC says I'm averaging 22.1mpg.
Which, compared to 18.1 with my E92 M3s for the same usage, seems pretty decent.

I averaged 29mpg in mine over 90,000 miles best I saw was 42mpg, 36mpg was easily done on a long run.

I had an stock F80 M3 that did 35mpg on my 9 mile commute, no motorway, 5am summer, ZERO traffic.

I now have a stage 1 F82 M4 that does 29mpg, same commute, same time, winter.

One of the biggest difference is the M4 is lowered 40mm F/R so i have to slow right down for the single lane speed bumps (the diff cooling fins take an absolute beating on these) whereas the M3 on stock ride height would fly over these 32mph in 6th gear.

When I first bought my car (used with 9k miles), I would get on average 270 miles on a tank. Now with 26k miles on the clock I get around 350+.

I don't feel like I've changed the way I drive. What I have noticed is that these cars HATE the A/C. If I run the A/C at all my gas mileage goes right into the dirt.

I just flashed MHD on the M4, Stage 1 93 map with cold start delete and GTS gearbox map. the same journey, same driving, same conditions is now getting me 32mpg. i just wanted more power and cold start delete but ended up getting a financial ROI in the form of smaller fuel bills. i'll take it.

I've been looking to join the M3/M4 owners club - from my 330d that I've had for years.
But it's the mpg question (besides the wife) that keeps nagging me not to.

The old boy is getting a service on Thursday so I'll be looking at the forecourt for what they've got.

Thank you. I didn't think that an average of 28mpg was possible with an M4. It would be nice if I can hang onto my 330d as well, as it has winter tyres so it'll be better for the winter months.

I too tend to average around 28mpg in mine over the 40k miles I’ve done in it over 5 years. Obviously it is a car that will vary massively depending where and how you drive it. I don’t commute or do much city driving. If you do or just use it for spirited drives you can expect low twenties.

425 mile tank last week. Bedfordshire to Yorkshire to London to Bedfordshire. They’re not so bad on motorway runs.

Filled it back up and decided this one will be a fun tank - especially as traction has now returned!
