DCT free revved before gear engagement, also got a safety system warning light

Good morning everyone. Yesterday driving my M3 two things happened that I have not experienced yet that I was hoping to get some clarification on.

First, well into my drive with the car warm at this point, I was taking off from a traffic light and the car did not immediately grab. For a slight slight half second it revved first n then went into gear. I did tap the gas rather than apply weight to it so I am wondering if the car, obviously quite computerized, maybe recognized the way I tapped the gas pedal, or maybe there is a slip issue I should keep a look out for.

Also, while driving home, I had an image of a red car appear in the onboard computer area which beeped a time or two. It then disappeared. Wondering if that was one of the many safety features the car has, as it pretty much has every option minus ceramics and the wifi option. I did not notice anyone overly close to me when this happened, but again I could be wrong as I am not familiar w how these safety features work.

The hesitation has happened to me before, although very rare. Probably happened twice in over 1 year of daily driving. Both circumstances were the same where I was approaching someone who was turning left, and I was trying to change lanes so I wasn't stuck behind him, and was alternating between braking and gas. I think the DCT got confused for a second.

Can't say I've ever seen the red car image though.

The red car image is the collision avoidance system. It senses if a car is getting too close for your driving conditions and will show a red car as a warning first. If the speeds continues or the car ahead gets even closer, it will beep and engage the breaks for you.

You can change the sensor settings, close, medium, etc. in the Idrive menu.

I believe automatic brake engagement only occurs below 35 mph. Don't tailgate and count on the computer stopping the car.

No, it also engages at 60mph+ as I had an incident once and actually tried to test the system as well. Both times it beeped and kicked it hard enough you could feel the car slowing down significantly.

Thanks for the info and clarification everyone. I didn't have anyone overly close to me when the car image came up, but good to know now why it did. Does this system alert if someone on the opposite side of the street comes somewhat close side by side while we pass each other? Asking bc I do like to do alot of mountain runs in the summer and the roads there are one way and not the widest either. Will this car be slowing me down while I am driving it hard if someone is passing me on the opposite side of the road?

No, "breaks" cause you drive it for so long you need a rest time.

It has kicked in before on my car without anyone in front of me. on occasion when the road turns and the sensors/computer dont know you're turning and see oncoming cars or objects.

Seems to me you engaged the "smokey burnout" mode. If you aggressively get on the throttle from rest, the engine revs will rise before the DCT dumps the clutch. If DSC is off, you get a burnout; if DSC/MDM is on, the car will bog down from DSC intervention. The harder you press on the throttle, the longer the pause and the greater the RPM rise before the clutch is dumped. So yes, it is all related to how you apply the throttle.

Adapting throttle application is a big part of learning how to drive DCT. How one applies the throttle dictates how the clutch is engaged.
