I find it odd that people don't "jiggle"...thought that was standard and good practice

I've always done it in manuals, very useful on older cars with vague shifters. New cars...it just feels good! :

with a big, sloppy gearbox with long throws (like my old Jeep), I used to do it. but with tighter transmissions like the F80's, I don't feel compelled to jiggle it at all in neutral

That's the whole point of the jiggle. . . The F8x platform (and a lot of other newer MT BMWs) snap wonderfully back to the center position. A lot of other older cars don't do that, so the habit comes from older gear shift mechanics.

I tend to do it most of the time in my S2K... probably will in my M3 as well when it gets here.. it's not really a jiggle per say, but just a flick to the left coming to neutral from the higher gears... maybe it's just a mental reaffirmation of the gear (or lack of gear) I'm in and giving myself permission to pick a gear of my choice while the car coasts!

I do the jiggle every single time I'm at a stop before I put it in 1st before I start accelerating.

If you jiggle it more than twice, then you're just playing with it.

I just flick it to the left once. I jiggle my stick in my dd (RSX-S). The F82 feels much more precise compared to my DD.

before starting the car I always "jiggle it....juuust a little bit." (That's a song btw
approaching stoplights - I jiggle once into neutral before releasing the clutch.

You're probably jiggling it too hard man... Be gentle with that stick...
Also I second that quote above: "Save the Manuals" I don't care about faster lap/shift times... I care about a greater sense (subjective) of driving involvement! |

Yup! My dad used to always do it on his old Mazda truck. When I started driving my first manual, I just couldn't help doing it myself. Just seemed like what you're supposed to do.
