Its hard to vote, if there are not the right engines included !!!

- The rumored and most likely V6 is an BiTurbo with eDrive Turbos and no TriTurbo !!!

- The S65 NA is an 4.0ltr. V8 and no 5.0ltr. !!!

Wouldn't it be nice if BMW M offered more than one engine for the F80/82? Some people wouldn't mind payin an extra 3-5 grand for a more powerful engine. Sometimes the M division has to consider cost....Look at all the money people spend on engine mods.

I voted for the V6 option, because I think it will be extremely cool and unique for the next M3 to have the most unique engine in the history of BMW.

Ugh, really? The eleven year old, iron block S54, with manual valve adjustments that could barely pass 2008 emissions standards? Since the S65 was lighter than the S54, why would we want to add two turbos, an intercooler and all related accessories to that old thing?

(No, the "tu" wouldn't stand for turbo, either)

I don't even understand why this option is in the list, if this poll has the intension to be taken any serious at all.

Levi, I don't get you.
You're proud of "boxer" and your avatar displays STI, so I assume you're a Subaru Impreza lover, but you're posting on the M3 forum, but you display that you are driving Alfa Romeo ?

Indeed there are some rumors (which I donīt really beleave!) that the M-GmbH ist developing an "new" 3,3ltr.Bi(Tri)Turbo R6 based on an M-spezific engine ... this for me could only meen S54 !!!

Would be worlds better than an N54/55 solution (there would be final at max. 3.2ltr.) ... sounds to me much like they had dug out the blessed S54 block back to fit him with turbo technology ... THAT would be at least one M-decent solution ... although I will not see any cost advantage over the 3.3ltr. V6, which performence for sure would have been better at worlds - overall car performence, not engine performence.

reasons:
- The S54 block is fairly heavy, and I do not think you can make him material technically much lighter if it is to endure so strong charge.
- If the S54 block is used, which means quite a lot of weight relatively far forward ... do not know if that's so good.
- As particularly insensitive the S54 was not known for.

Nevertheless, it would be an engine, which I would be glad to have

If there was not the main stumbling block would be ... namely, the one, that all the time they probably developed in the direction of V6, and now has swung around to a completely new engine and therefore the premiere of the new F80 M3 probably would be at least an year later than expected ... is probably not much earlier than the F82 M4 would debut and that make me very unhappy !!!

Love it, if the M-GmbH would have been so nice to consider, that it could have been worth/clever to bring the F80 M3 first with the "old" powertrain (engine and gearbox!) of E9x M3 to the market and later switch it together with the F82 M4 to the new powertrain. So they would have enough time to develop the new powertrain and bring the F80 M3 to the market as early as expected.

Just my 2 cents.

@hwelvaar: PMed.

@Uli_HH: I really am not sure about the "new" engine. How long does it take. They should already get something concrete. Look at the M6 prototypes, they started testing long before the M5 Concept was even revealed.
Concerning the S54 engine, they cannot use just so. S54 alone is already heavier than S65, and add the heavy weight of the complexe turbo system, it will weigh more than S63, which I think but have no fact, is heavier than S85. S54 block is made of iron. Would it be possible to use the same molds but pour magnesium/aluminium? Also, S54 is a high compression engine. The ones that were running turbos had moddified internals.

Insider SCOTT said that the M3 will get a convertional 6 cylinder engine, by this I understand I6, which would be N54 by M. He said for the M4, however, a completely new concept will make its way. By this I would say M3 F80 will get the 3,2l I6 based on N54, and the M4 F82 will get the 3,3l V6 based on S63, they'll have more time to develop it properly. But then regarding the problem of high costs, it does not seem very plausible.

I also donīt think that they would use an development of the old heavy S54 ... make absolutly no sence if they would save money ... but I also think it would make no sence to develop two new engines ... if the F80 M3 gets an interim engine, it only make sence to use the existing M3 S65 powertrain.

Thanks for the explanation in PM.

I don't think BMW will use different engines for sedan and coupe M3/M4.

I need 4 doors in my M3. So I'll be pissed off if the 2-door version would feature a different/better engine. But I could live with the idea that the car setup of the coupe is somewhat sportier/extremer than the sedan. (like with the previous generation M5 and M6 - 5L V10)

Also: developing, testing, producing, crash-testing, bulk-manufacturing an engine just for the relatively limited number of 'M3 sedans' doesn't make any economical sense.

The new Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca that spanks the E9X M3 on a road course comes with a very capable 5.0 V8 engine that makes the Boss reach much higher speeds than yhe s65 powered car.
And the Boss 302 costs less than 50 grand.
