Everyone wants comparisons but the fundamental problem is that the M4 is the first new-gen car into its segment. Especially regarding its key global competitiion - Audi and Merc.

So they are either comparing it to older products (e.g. RS5), which of course it beats, or cars from difference market segments (911 etc), which of course it tends to lose to.

The meaningful and crucial reviews for most potential buyers will come when the new C63 and Audi XYZ (and some of the other fringe sedan based GT cars, perhaps Jag, Maser etc) come out.

As for the drifting.....all I see when I see these reviewers doing this ad nauseum is a car and tyres being tortured in order to get around a corner slower than you could without said torture. Makes no sense other than as a silly marketing show-boat.
Hold on there. There is the RC-F. The M4 is it's competitor, so there are 2 of the new gen cars. Now, whether or not the RC-F is available for review is another thing in itself.

Was just complimenting the GT3, using some exaggeration. Obviously that is not all it shows.

I think a prudent person will wait until all new versions are out. Regardless, I will not buy BMW, just because of the price discrepancy with MB. Good luck to all!!!

This is very true... BMW needs to get their Canadian pricing in line with MB. There was, and still is, a $10,000 gap which is crazy.

Whatever. Winning by > 2 seconds vs a very capable car that is *About* as fast as an E9x M3 is impressive.

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream.

Absolutely impressive.

According to specs the RS5 has 25 hp over the M3/4. Right...

He indicated 115 mph on that straight in the Audi and "over 120 mph" in the M4. >5 mph difference on that short of a straight is crazy. 425 hp claim is laughable.

No doubt it's mega quick and really good looking, just not in that color.

Not a surprise, the GT3 is a fairly uncompromising track car designed to be used mostly on the track.

I'm surprised at how many people are trying to diminish this review. It's not the first review that has shown absolutely remarkable track times for the M4...

And redarding the drifting-the driver even said he was going to cut out the drifting for his fast lap, acknowledging that drifting is slower around the track.

Yeah they are 19s but the take rate on the 19s is extremely small as most get the 20s (they come with the titanium pckg blah blah blah).

I don't know which tires come with the 19s but I'm almost positive it's not Michelin PSSs otherwise every one of the RS5s would be getting those.

I personally hate the stock Pirellis. When I switched my S4 out from the stock Contis to PSSs my cornering speeds went from 130 to 155mph...NO JOKE it makes a HUGE difference.

Yep, tires matter in a major way

Yeah unfortunately I don't think they make the PSSs in the RS5 20" size (same BS that the Pirelli's are custom made for the RS5 BS). And please correct me if I'm wrong on that as I'd love to get rid of the Pirellis on my RS5. You would think after being the official tire for F1 they'd have learned how to make a decent performance tire.

Not a surprise but the margins over the Turbo S and the GTR were surprisingly wide. Not insubstantial machinery. And over a short lap too.

P zero corsas are a good tire. But yeah, pretty slim pickens for the rs5 in 20" http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...ing=XL&tab=All

How come every high performance car doesn't come with PSSs standard? They are so far above and beyond everything else. Kudos to BMW for going that direction.

Someone mentioned earlier the track battle with those two was done in the damp conditions so that likely accounts for a decent bit of that.

Love how these car mags seem hell bent on mismatched comparison tests. Of course a weaker braking car will lose. Especially the heavy RS5.
do you track your car? there are numerous reviews and tests which show that on a single lap there is basically no performance gain from ccb over steel brakes.

the benefit is longevity and resistance to fade under long and extreme conditions. not a one lap test.
