My iDrive system is possessed
My car ('18 M3) has 8700 miles, and about a month ago I noticed while driving that the system is starting to behave as if someone is selecting items from the menu, switching functions, doing things to the map, and at one point initiated a call to BMW Assistance by itself.
After a few hours it stopped doing it on its own. Today it started doing it again. I caught a few seconds of it on video while the system was selecting functions on its own. Did anyone experienced anything like that? Any idea what it could be?

Any other electrical devices installed? Could be a device or module failing giving erratic CAN signals.

I have my phone and that's it. The car is not modified and no addons. I made sure that the area around the iDrive selector is clear and nothing is touching it or even close to it.

Looks like a dealer trip is needed, possibly a module failing.

Unless you car starts levitating above the road and puking from the ac vents, it’s not possessed. Last edited by IK6SPEED; 07-21-2018 at 08:53 PM.. |

Same thing happens to me occasionally. I haven't found a rhyme or reason to it. If you hold the radio power button for ~30 sec (feels like eternity), it will reset idrive and usually resolve the problem. I'm afraid the dealer will just say they can't reproduce.
Please update if you get it resolved somehow. Tim |

Mine does this as well. It's touchscreen malfunctioning. I find it happens when the screen is in the sun/when the interior is hot.
There's a TSB for it and another thread about it somewhere detailing the delaer fix.

I had the same. It's a faulty touchscreen. Took me 3 months to convince the dealer and then another 2 months for them to get the replacement screen and fit it.

I bought my car in December of 17 (18 zcp) and almost two weeks later this started to happen and I took it to the dealer and had them reprogram it like five times and now this Friday they agreed to replace it after I brought up lemon laws.
Let's see how it goes will update on here when I have driven it for a week or so. |

this is a video of me driving when this happened (one hand on the wheel and the other filming lol). From my experience, it has something to do with the touchscreen itself and not the programming. If you can't fix this immediately and it's interfering with your driving I would recommend turning off the display for a while, sometimes for me after I turn it off for a few minutes and turn it on the problem goes away.

UPDATE
So I've had my m3 for a few months after the touchscreen was replaced and so far not a single sign of the issue. It took them about a week to get the part and have it installed but besides that no issue so far.

It's a hardware problem. Try to convince your dealer to replace the screen first. Otherwise the first attempt will be reprogramming and several trips to the dealer later.

Happened to me a couple weeks ago '18 ZCP. Took a couple videos. The clicking sound was the most annoying. lol Hasn't happened since, but if it happens more often I'll have 'em replace it.
