Doesn't sound good in the second video. I like the typical BMW 6 cylinder sound , and that's the first vid I've seen that I really didn't like the sound in. Maybe due to iPhone, who knows.

Will be interesting to hear it in person. Still sold on the car, and if I have to mod the echaust, I will. My 1m sounded great, and so does the 335is. No reason this can't too.

Very frustrating. Car looks (and I'm sure will drive) amazing, yet sounds terrible. Like a seeing a smokin hot chick, but the closer you get you realize she has terrible bad breath. Take that f80 to the Dentist!

I am. It doesn't compare. The IS exhaust is loud but still conservative. This one is very racy. When revving its not loud unless revved to redline. But under load its sounds really nice.

HOWEVER, quite contrary to what it seems as the E9X was so popular, BMW is simply returning to its roots rather than moving away. The S65 was phenomenal, one of my favourite motors, and it was surely NOT the usual BMW M way. I'm okay with the sound as I have been a die hard M fan for years and this is just simply how they've sounded, with the exception of the S65. IMO, the E46 M was a terrible sounding car but I would have purchased one in a heartbeat. This is looking to be somewhat the same.

I'm completely okay with BMW returning back to its roots, as this is what I'm used to an M3 sounding like.
Cant wait to see yours at a meet hopefully...but don't you think BMW's roots is NA engines rather than turbos? Also what M engine was built based off a non M engine, besides the S5X we got here for E36. That's why the euro M3's were so sought out after because it wasn't a glorified 328.

Regardless of what I am saying for discussions sake, congrats on your order sir!

Thank you to the OP for the videos and pics!

I am anxious to see the aftermarket for these vehicles

Hi Jon,

Yes, everything you said is 100% true and I agree and my comment likely wasn't fully accurate. I was referring to the sound of the car, reintroduction of the inline 6, and focus on lighter weight. But your right, it isn't a bespoke engine as they have been in the past (although for argument's sake the s65 was based off the v10 that preceded it). Also, BMW's history undoubtedly lies in the NA as opposed to FI, having made a name with their use of the inline 6. However like I said, I am interested in how BMW is able to use their old heritage in tandem with new technology. Generally though yes, you are correct what with you are saying and it isn't a full return to the past.

I've heard really good things about your shop and I'm not too far either. I'll definitely see you in the near future and I'm glad to see that you guys are also active on the board!

Exactly.

Or that being essentially in a tunnel doesn't significantly enhance exhaust sound...

That being said, I don't think it sounds that bad, and generally I am critical of many F8X M3/4 exhaust sounds in videos.

The car sounds amazing in person. Everyone should reserve judgement until you hear one in person.

Which M engines wasn't based on a BMW AG engine?

M88, S85/S65 wasn't based on a BMW AG engine, but that's about it...

S14: Based on M10 block with a M88 (M1 engine) head
S50: Based on M50 block in both the 3.0 and 3.2 version
S52: Based on M50 block
S54: Based on M50 block (evolution of the S52)
S62: Based on the M62 engine
S63: Based on the N63 engine

So, in more than one way the S55 is a return to the roots for a M3 engine... It's a I6 based on a production engine, in a long line of M engines based on BMW AG engines... The S65/S85 are the ones that stands out from the norm, or M tradition, in this regards, not the S55!

IS exhaust is not loud. It only seems loud during cold start. Once it warms up, it gets pretty quiet.

IS exhaust also rasps really bad above 5k rpm with catless downpipe and secondary cats removed. It was so bad (like Honda tin can rasp) that I had to put catted downpipe and vibrant tube resonators to kill some rasps.

I had an iS for 3 years and loved the sound (i did not modify it though). Would take the car up in the canyons with my buddies (e92 M3 and S4) and they would always talk about how loud the IS exhaust was.

This is subjective of course

Oh dear my ears did not like that. I can imagine if I wasn't looking at the new M3 I would associate that sound with a Jap 4cyl turbo with a cheap aftermarket exhaust. No joke!

Stock 335is sounded better than this.

Yes, however, some exhaust produce rasp that sounds amazing.
This one on IS produced embarrassingly bad sounding rasp.
