You have a 981 with a silky smooth F6. The car in question has a highly boosted 4 banger ala STI/Focus RS/CLA 45. Porsche, in my humble opinion, fucked up the heart of this otherwise fantastic sports car.

So Porsche creates a market now where you must buy a 911 in order to get a F6 - and those start close to 100K, so it's all about the perception of the brand and maximizing profits from my perspective. I had a 981 CS for two years, and it's on another planet from a handling perspective compared to my F80. That's not a knock on the M3, the 981 is just that good from a feel, sound, and involvement standpoint. The M3 is also much faster, easier as a DD, and has much more utility. As a person with the means and space for one car, the 981 was obviously awesome, but the F80 has been a nice replacement for sure. I just don't love it like I loved the 981. Don't love the 718 either, in the couple of short experiences I have had with it, but it's most likely also on another planet from a handling perspective...just not as good in the sound or experience departments.

I prefer the 718 S/GTS exhaust note over my previous civic M3.. granted, I don't have enough seat time in a ZCP F8x to compare it to the 718 S.
Both great cars, honestly. If you need the space/utility get an F8x. If not, I highly recommend trying the Cayman.

I say this with a little tongue in cheek, but I just couldn't buy a Vette. There's so many great things about the cars, especially the new ones and particularly from a "bang for the buck" side, but...they always have seemed cheesy to me somehow. I don't know if that makes sense, but even though a 981 or 718 would not be able to keep up with a Vette in most situations, I would take the Porsche every time.
Or a Bimmer. but that's just me.

Most of that is to get the valve button installed next to the gear selector - the physical part doesn't take long at all. Man, I miss that sound.

It can be, yes. The performance value of the vette cannot be ignored.
For me personally, I DD my Cayman as I did my F80. I've strongly considered a GS corvette, but the issue with the vette is finding decent snow tires. They make them but I believe they are 295 or 305 in the rear and $$$. If you don't need to worry about snow then it's a non-issue obviously.

The S55 sounds dreadful for a straight 6, it's all farts, rasps and contrived pops and bangs, we have no room to point at the 718 IMHO for sounding not great as a 4 pot. I love my car but I'd never start saying other cars sound rubbish when it's also the F80's Achilles heel.

As far as a 718, all the reviews I've read, bash the sound. Coming from a E90 M3 to F80 M3, my E90 sounded much better, but the F80 was the better M3. I believe that is the same case as I plan to get a 718 in 1-2 years. I do not keep my cars long, and make extra payments, so I am always in a decent position to trade in. |

And seem to be older as well - the Dallas cars and coffee is huge, and the Vettes have their own section, which is enormous in its own right. There’s just a different vibe over in that section - I can understand why people love them, but it’s not my thing at all.

Audi has done a great job at making a six cylinder sound really good. The new RS5 isn't loud, but it does sound deep and has a rumble to it.
The 718 GTS is a far cry from the 981 in terms of sound, but the performance and the package is second to none. |

Agreed! I struggle with spending the $$ on a 911 (feel like I 'need' the 'S') but $93K Can (with only the PDK) for a four banger? Even my wife would laugh at me (lol) but the car looks gorgeous and no doubt handles like a dream....! |
