Anyone else notice static/hiss during BT calls?

Hi all - on my ‘18 M4 with an iPhone on iOS 11, I notice hissing during Bluetooth calls. The speakers will be silent until the other party speaks, at which time their voice comes in accompanied by background hiss. I also have to crank the volume to almost max.

The issue was worse when I had an ASD defeat harness installed, but is still here without.

'17 M3 with CarPlay. Device running iOS11. I experience the same problem when the phone is not also plugged in. Call quality is so bad that it is truly unusable.

Plug the phone in and there is no problem with call/connection quality.

Makes absolutely no sense and drives me insane. In my previous car without carplay I never had a problem.

Interesting! Do you notice the hiss only when using the built-in BMW telephone function, or when using CarPlay?

I had been noticing it when using the built-in telephone function, regardless of whether I was plugged into USB or not.

After seeing your post, I re-enabled CarPlay (which I otherwise haven't been using) and the hiss is GONE!

Switched back to the built-in function, and it comes right back.

'18 with CarPlay and iOS 11. No problems...plugged in or not...connection is definitely not as loud as my '15 M3 was....although no hissing or interference/static.

FYI: CarPlay uses WiFi or USB, not Bluetooth.

Encanto, does this mean that if you plug a phone into the USB port of the car, that the audio quality improves versus when using CarPlay over WiFi?

If that is true, it'd be worth the small effort to plug my iPhone in, instead of leaving it in my pocket when driving.

USB data transfer is faster than WiFi, vis à vis. You may not hear the difference, though.

I think the connection is a WiFi bluetooth handshake.

So even though I didn't opt for the wifi option in my '18 but have CarPlay does that mean I can program on or VO code my Wifi on?

This is not the WiFi hotspot (6NW) so it cannot be coded as the hotspot hardware is not present.
