It was very cool. High stress and pressure at times but it can be very rewarding to push your limits like that. Moonless night cat shots and 2am traps in 18 foot seas, etc. It's a young man's game though and I'm turning 40 this year so I was happy to step aside. The M3 is meant to be my consolation/retirement prize from my wife for giving up flying and moving back to her hometown. It's working so far, lol.

I'm sure it wasn't all glamorous and couldn't of been fun getting shot at through our countries various wars. I know this comes off hollow a lot of times, but in all seriousness, thank you for your service to our country. Same to the rest of current military members and vets on this board. Especially while the vast majority of us didn't do shit during our countries latest wars/conflicts. My dad is a two plus tour Vietnam Vet and my Grandfather was a WW2 vet. I've seen first hand what war does to the survivors.

Sorry folks for a serious post in a very entertaining thread. Carry on .
Not hollow to me, but I know what you mean.

I play video games, but occasionally I have to write software to support that job.

That has to be unreal and unexplainable. Does the M3 come even close to replacing some of that excitement? At least the road isn't pitching like a carrier deck in near zero vis. I can't even imagine the level of concentration and stress involved in landing a plane in those conditions.

I feel like such a pansy when I soloed in a Cessna 150 23 some years ago. And I had an unmoving 8000 foot runway to play with, clear sky and no wind. I was 17 and stressed

You never really get used to night time carrier ops but daytime can be pretty low stress. As for the M3 replacing some of the excitement, I think so. Your sense of speed is related to how close you are to the ground so even at 500kts and 200 feet in a Hornet the "speed rush" experience is similar to about 25mph in a car. The M3's confident ability to cruise at 110-125mph on the open desert roads around here is very satisfying. The thrill in a fighter is really in the 3 dimensional and dynamic nature of the flying though so of course a car can never replace that. A la...

Ha, well that's no small feat either, especially for a high school kid. You have to give up a lot of PS3 time with your bro's to get an instructor to sign off on a solo. I actually started flying pretty young as well, and in Cessna 150s. First solo was at 16, and license at 17. Ultimately it became a job, albeit with some great perks. I interview at Delta soon and don't think I'll take the job. Like anything, do it long enough and it stops being fun. Besides, I already had the coolest flying job there is, so airlines won't be exciting.

I am so jealous of you fighter pilot guys... I dreamed about being one of you as a kid (I think most kids do) but I grew up to have a much more boring career. I should have been a fighter pilot... the girls, the motorcycles, the coolness factor...

Ah yes the open desert roads around Ridgecrest are abundant. As I recall when I went to meet my wife's family for the first time 22 years ago they took me to see the nearest point of interest DEATH VALLEY. Once I get my M3 maybe I will not complain about driving to Ridgecrest CA
