Anyone done this mod to convert to the B58 coils?
Kits and coils going for $500 ish. Supposedly 2.3x the spark as the S55 coils, can anyone attest to a difference in performance?

Yes, I did it and its worth it. Less ignition timing corrections overall.

Wouldn't that be S58 coils?

Correct, you dont need to retune for the new coils. The B58 ignition coil dwell time is very close to the same as the S55.

I'm wondering if different coils have different amount of spark latency (time between being told to fire and actually firing), so potentially impacting your actual spark timing, despite running the same timing map? It would make sense with different windings you get different inductance values, and therefore different latency? I've researched it a bit and found some clues suggesting this, but haven't found anything definitive. |

but the focus is ignition of the combustible mixture based on spark energy, so directly analogous. They're basically saying that with higher spark energy, the bigger spark kernel reduces the ignition delay, and increases the initial flame propagation speed during ignition. So it's improving flame propagation and combustion stability by "kick starting" (my own words) the flame propagation out from the ignition point (the spark kernal) through the mixture in the cylinder - this I can get my head around. https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...60544221024920 |

Based on my logs, I don't think upgrading ignition helps significantly until you upgrade turbos. It adds weight, so you have to consider that, as well, if you're a road racer and care about handling.

Coils? Sparks? What’s year is your car? I’m beginning to wonder if production date has anything to do with the ability to run the coil swap without issues….
