so since no company will sell a boot by itself, I had an alcantara one with white stitching custom made by Mike at CobyWheel (http://cobywheel.com/f80-manual-shift-boot.html), and then I bought the Raceseng black contour gloss knob and made sure to email Jarrett at Raceseng to specifically ask for the black adapter. Only other thing I had to get was the ring at the bottom of the boot which gives it its shape, can be gotten off the boot of any new m3/m4. The ring fits Mike's boot perfectly so I didn't have to use jbweld or anything of the sort, installation including taking off the old knob/boot took about 10 minutes. all in all was $3x for the boot, knob was $15x shipped, and the ring was $20.

Nice job , my installer charged me 1hr of labor and its really good when you can do things yourself.

lol my buddy who's a fanatic helped me with it but essentially after we had to pry off the old shift knob and boot(unclipping the boot was pretty easy but getting the knob off took both of us pulling on it at the same time), but once the old knob and boot were off the rest was sortof plug and play.

Cant you fit the top of the boot over the adapter instead of having it showing? I just ordered one of these knobs and was hoping that was the case.

Thats the main issue and i would have liked it that way too but i used m-performance boot and it needs to be cut a lot to fit it over the adapter and am told even that may not be possible

Other option is to use the stock boot and couple of installers told me that to its a difficult exercise to seperate the shifter from the boot and then cut it open to do that

Let me know how you can get it done and would be interested to see that.

Yes you can. Just use a zip tie or something to hold it in place.

do you mean using stock boot ? Installers tells me they cannot seperate the boot from knob without messing it up

When all the part numbers suggest that the 18' is no different that the 15', 16', and 17'... You gotta take into the consideration that maybe your installer is the one that's wrong.

the boots and knobs have always been one piece, if you want a custom knob you're gonna have to get a custom boot too. i didn't try to pull the boot up across the adapter because im fond of how the black adapter looks, i assume you can however you'd just have to tie the boot higher on the inside.

Yes I was able to do that cleanly. I simply ran a razor around the circumference of where the boot meets the knob and it separated perfectly. Took me maybe 5 minutes of carefully maneuvering the razor. Mind you this was an F30 shift knob but the process should be the same for the F8x knob.

I dont think the boot/knob would separate by simply pulling, perhaps that is what your installer meant? But there is a seam where the boot meets the knob which allows it to separate cleanly by cutting it.

Installed this

Totally changed how the shifter feels through gears. More mechanical and less rubbery.

I don't miss one bit losing the illuminated shift knob. This is seriously a must do OEM mod for 6mt owners

How did you finally manage to get it unplugged? Mine seems impossible to separate.
