removing wheel stud kit

My car came with wheel studs installed. I'd like to remove them and install the OEM lug bolts.

I assumed they are loctite'd on. After removing the wheel, can I remove them using an allen wrench up top? Or do I need to install some bolts on the threads and break them free that way?

Allens are used to install, not remove. Use the "Double-nut" method to remove, you can always use the allen again once the stud has broken loose.

make sure you have a thread chaser before you do this. if theres any loctite left in there then screwing in new lug nuts can be difficult.

Thank you both! The front studs were a pain to remove! Even the double nut method would not turn the stud! I had to insert first nut, then impact the second nut, then loosen. What a pain.

Heat is your friend.

I bought a $30 propane torch. Heat up the stud a little and they come right out. No double nut method needed.

If Stud changes are a way of life buy a stud removal socket.

Why do people locktite wheel studs? It is completely unnecessary. Properly torquing the nut prevents the stud from loosening just like properly torquing a lug bolt prevents the bolt from loosening. You just need enough threads of the stud engaging the hub assembly to prevent the stud from being ripped out while torquing the nut and during driving. When installing the stud into the hub, you really don't need any torque at all. In practice you want some torque so that removal of the nut doesn't remove the stud at the same time.

Wheel studs are just 2 piece lug bolts. No one goes around locktiting their lug bolts (at least I hope they don't).

If your stud is coming out when you remove the nut, reinstall the stud a few threads deeper.

And the other question, is why would you remove wheel studs? They make wheel changes so much easier...

That would have been my next step if the studs gave me more hassle. Front studs were ON THERE. The rear ones not so much. I guess all the heat from the hub somewhat seized the front studs.

Maybe because now you have 2 points of failure vs. 1. Extra precaution?

1. I don't plan on changing wheels for the track.
2. Most tire shops won't touch a car with wheel studs
3. 2 points of failure vs. 1

I actually find it easier without studs to place the wheel up on the hub, then hold and spin to align the bolt holes vice trying to align 5 holes at the same time with studs.

I guess that's what the saying YMMV is for.
