Considering purchasing one

Hi All,

I currently have a F30 335D, and am considering getting a F80.

Apart from using the car for school runs, my main use is to get us skiing.

So here, is my worry, and why I am hesitating

1) How good is this thing on snow - Winter tyres of course
2) How much range will you get once on the motorways at around 90mph?
3) What's the noise like cruising at 80-90MPH?

Basically, just want to get an idea of what they are like on 1000 miles journeys.

Thanks!

Would like to know how many miles I will get out of a tank of fuel if cruising around 90mph

About 280-300 I would think. Maybe a little less.

You cruise on a motorway at 90MPH?!

Meanwhile, would think it's an even bigger handful in the snow - not really the right environment for an M car... And they are quite noisy than say your 335d. Drive one and see... 300 on a tank optimistic at 90. Plus some points for speeding!

If you are using and therefore choosing a car for snow it has to be 4WD !!

Snow is not a good mix for an M rear wheel drive car.

Garage List
It's perfectly fine on snow in winter tyres, 90mph range is irrelevant because the police will stop you before you run out of fuel and it's noisy at 90mph due to the police sirens😄

Well, since I'm spending a lot of the journey on a German autobahn, 90 is quite reasonable, with some blasts of 120-140mph!!

I was worried about the tyre noise before I got my F80, but have found it to be fine at European motorway speeding speeds (140-145 kph). I don't need winter tyres, so can't comment on them.

If you are on cruise control in 7th, mileage is surprisingly good. Mash the throttle and it sucks.

Disconnect ASD for a quieter ride.

Whilst it will of course do those things with the right tyres for the snow, if that's your criteria/worries then there are other choices that would service your needs better.

I get about 30mpg on a weekly 200 mile run, which is a mixture of urban/rural plus motorway whilst not driving for economy and I cruise at 90mph when the traffic allows giving an effective range of about 350 miles.

I think the G30 540i xdrive sounds perfect for the job.

It sounds to me that for the purpose you say the car will be used for, an M3 is one of the least suitable cars you could choose.

so, I've run 600hp RWD cars in winter, up to Lake Placid, etc. for years. With the correct tires and skills, the only issue is ground clearance. PERIOD. I plan to run Hakka 8s next year on this F80 and don't expect any limitations except for the aforementioned.

As for MPG, I find it's really related more to how 'enthusiastic' you are on throttle. Then again, I didn't buy this car to save the planet. I bought it to give the dinosaurs their revenge. My wife's ELR is saving the planet. 6000 miles so far and 18 gallons of gasoline and one oil change. And my neighbor's Tesla and the other neighbor's Prius.

As for ski trips, CF roof will limit your rooftop options substantially unless you go the DIY route. If rooftop cargo is essential to your plans, go for the non-CF. In all likelihood, it will also be a bit quieter at highway speeds without the CF roof.

I had a 335d before and the M3 is a lot different. Obviously you haven’t got the 4WD so traction can be an issue in the damp/wet let alone the snow! Whereas with the 335d you can floor it anywhere, anytime, you cant always do that in the M3. In the dry its fine though. In snow with winters, I'm sure it'll be fine in Efficient mode, no different to any other RWD car (ie 340i) in that mode.

I see you are in London so your main issue of fuel consumption will be around town driving. In my 335d it never dropped below 30mpg but in the M3, around town expect 18-20mpg.

We regards the noise, a lot more tyre noise from anything after 30mph upwards. It is a noisey car so if you're after refinement then stick with what you've got ..... or get a G30 5 series.

Of course the M3 is a more exciting car to drive and bloody quick, based on the Top Gear lap time from last week.

I'm not really worried about fuel consumption, its more the hassle of stopping to fill it up. In town its no problem, as there are so many pumps around, but when on long journeys, when you've just done 200 miles, and your range says 50 miles........................

If the car would do 350 miles, at a reasonable speed, then its not an issue for me.

I'm picking mine up this week! Can't wait!

I will be taking the m3 on ski trips too, currently drive a 535d with Pirelli sottozero winters. The 5 series being a heavy car loaded with the family and kitchen sink was no problem driving in snow through the Alps!

After doing the last 3 years in the 35d I'm actually not bothered about the fuel consumption and would be happy to stop every few hundred miles to have a break and smoke!

I too cruise at 90+ and would like to know the range of the tank just for peace of mind!

I think you'd only get 350 miles to a tank if you drove like Miss Daisy at 50mph.
That would be the absolute max you'd get out of a tank - you certainly wouldn’t get that doing 90mph!!! More like 300 miles I’d have thought.

Yeah, I think that would be about right too. Well, decision made, I've decided to go for it. At the end of the day, it's only really one or two long trips a year, so I'll live with it. Deposit paid, M3 and (hopefully) some fun, here I come!!

Hah, I'll be looking out for fellow M3 drivers on my way to the alps next year then!! Hopefully we won't all be stranded on the same stretch of motorway!!
In all fairness though, the authorities are very efficient at clearing the roads, so there's no fear of having to plough through mountains of snow.

Congrats. Despite always running dedicated winter setup, I also keep a set of snow chains in the trunk "just in case". Have never needed to use them, but had run them a few times just for shits and giggles. The Maggi and Thule/Konig K-Summits have been easy fit and very effective on each car I've put them on. Will run the Maggi Trak Sport #215 on my 245/45-18 winters setup for the M3.

Nah, just a standard one - black paint with black leather and carbon fibre. Few options. its a used car, so no choice really. Went for a lower mileage one, so hopefully not too many goes on the launch control yet!!
