BMW fitted towbar

I've had BMW retro-fit a towbar to a couple of cars....E90 and E70 X5. On both occasions it required that the software options were modified and sw reloaded in order to get things like reversing sensors, lights, reversing camera, DTC, DSC, ABS and the various fault warning lights working properly with a trailer.

Update

I've test fitted a second towbar which is a Bosal (050-783)
The pictures looked promising, but it didn't work so well. The bar itself sat higher, and hit the heat-shield further up toward the curve, and I didn't want to trim my heat-shield further. Secondly, the mount for the electrics sits closer to the bumper (further away from the exhaust) , but it means that the diffuser would need to be cut, which I wanted to avoid.

So, I have stuck with the original Westfalia towbar, and mounted the 13 pin connecter

Then ran the cabling

Finally, refitted the bumper, and test fitted

It doesn't swivel, but I'm not that fussed. Probably could make a mount that would slide vertically up though - will have to consider how it can be done.

Have been traveling a lot and only now got to see your update - looking great! Well done sir!

Indeed I would have to find a flip-up/slide up solution for the plug-in module (my OCD side ) but more to the point have you managed to get the reverse sensors to shut off when hooked up?

Despite comments I notice from a prev poster I had the Westfalia system with their bike rack (has break lights, turn signals etc) installed and, with a very minor adjustment needed, had it all work seamlessly with the onboard systems - indicators and braked lights all worked and reverse sensors shut off when plug connected (can't recall right now exactly what we had to do over 5 years ago!) but the guys at my local go-to shop figured it out pretty quick.

I haven't tried to get the reverse sensors auto shut-off tbh. I will have a go at it in the future, just don't really have the time to put into at the moment. I beleive it should be possible - I know it certainly worked on my E90 and E70 with the same Westfalia electrics kit. The rest of the electrics (brake, indicators, reverse, numberplate light), work fine without coding, and the fitting was exactly as per instructions.
