Looks like the driver is more at home in the E30 than in the F80. Car control is better in the E30 and looks less skittish. Race car setup obviously. Watching F80 was really boring.

That F-80 was being soooooooo poorly driven. Driver is obviously not familiar with the car and totally missing the racing lines around the track. Conversely like others have said we are comparing a stripped out purpose driven race car that is NOTHING like a stock e-30. I mean lets do a full blown stripped out race car conversion on a F-80 and lets put it up against a GT3.. Guess which car will win? This is just like other threads that go something like "Well if that my E-92 had headers and a stage 2 blah blah and slicks, and purple unicorns breathing fire out the exhaust I could have totally taken that F-80. Its just so silly. Lets compare stock to stock and see how many cars are still standing against the f-80. Anybody who says this car is not good on track has NEVER driven one on a track because this car is track ready out of the box folks. The the opinion is shared by many more than just me. I dont claim to be any kind of hotshot track driver and just another weekend warrior but I have driven my F-80 enough miles on the Worlds best tracks to know that this is easily the best performing M Car ever. Period. There is no Debate... can we move on?..Thank You...Management

And unless I'm mistaken, the E30 DTM is around 1500 pounds lighter than the new M3/M4, which further adds to the silliness. |

IMO that was a combination of a number of factors:
1. The track favors lighter cars with all the turns and few straights so the lighter E30 with 1/2 the power wins 2. The driver for the E30 knew the car and the track MUCH better than the driver for the F80 Would like to see similar experienced drivers on a longer track (or a drag race LOL).

Still wouldn't matter who actually won. The e30 DTM might even be slower but would win on style points alone. Everything else is irrelevant. |

While i do think the new M3 is way too 'large'....i think it's unfair to compare it to a dedicated DTM race car. That E30 DTM is a stripped out, dedicated race car. My guess is that it also has racing/track tires. The M3 likely has street tires. That in itself would probably make a big difference in performance and handling.
While this video is entertaining to hear that glorious E30......it's futile to compare these 2 as they are entirely different. |

Amazing contrast between the cars. The E30 was smooth and a pleasure to watch, the footage of the F80 was jarring. Driver spent more time on the gators than the track. He clearly had no control of he car, he was clueless on his acceleration curve, brake zones and turn in. Other track footage of DTM drivers far more interesting to watch and understand the potential of the car.

Would have been more interested as an experiment if they would have run the long course with the same driver.
However standard spec cars hardly have any a chance against stripped out purpose built race cars. In the latest EVO they do a comparison between an Audi r8 v10 plus and a Renault Clio Cup. The r8 has a 322 bhp advantage (the Clio has a 0-62 time of 6 seconds). Yet with slicks and lower weight, race suspension they both finish a tenth apart over a 1:04 lap. |
