Several times I've accidentally started up in Manual mode, thinking I was in D. But after hearing the revs, I normally catch it by 4-5000 rpms. I'm still in break-in, so trying to take it easy.

My car sees redline very frequently as have every car I have owned. The car is made to handle it. I would not hesitate to continue doing so nor have I ever hesitated on most cars I have driven (the exceptions being other peoples cars without permission and cars with mechanical issues).
The only part of hitting redline and getting fuel cut that worries me is that I missed the shift. Also, sometimes in auto-x or ice racing I have let the car bang off the limiter because it saves time. I suspect that with the rev-matching it would be a moot point on this vehicle as I have yet to be in that situation yet. |

Hitting redline on the DCT is really not a big deal. It will just bounce off the rev limiter. The bigger deal would be if you downshifted to a much lower gear for the speed you are at and that would force the revs to go way past redline, rev limiter or not. DCT protects you against this as it won't let you downshift to that low a gear. However on the manual, it's a different story. It will go into whatever gear you want it to and the moment you let out that clutch, that's when you'll cause some serious damage.

DCT here and it happens every now and again to me...usually in second. Honestly, it's no big deal. Don't fret it. It's pretty easy to do this while driving spiritedly and playing music loudly.
Over 10k and no ill-effects so far.

I'll say this again. I can't count the number of times I bounced off the rev limiter in my E90 M3 DCT and E46 M3 Manual. Also happened in other cars. No one can drive concentrating 100% of the time especially in the DCT when sometimes I would forget I am in the manual mode. That's exactly why you have the rev limiter. The engine just cuts power so it doesn't allow you to go past that rev so nothing is damaged.
Now here is how you WILL go past the rev limiter and damage the engine..... In a 6 Speed Manual if you shift to a lower gear and engage that gear while at a speed that is beyond redline for that particular gear. In this situation the rev limiter really can't offer any protection because the gear is engaged, the wheels are turning at that speed so your crank will rotate that that excessive rpm. You will likely damage your engine this way. And while we are on this topic, this is also a really good example of how a DCT differs from a manual among many other things. OP you bought a DCT so you ar safe

Ya you are ok, on a DCT I don't even think the car will let you downshift to a gear that would hurt the car...in a 6 speed MT, you can manually shift the car to a lower gear and cause some major damage.

I had this happen today. I was in manual mode and floored the gas pedal in 1st gear and it hit redline before I got a chance to shift. I'm still learning the car but what struck me about this was the sudden loss of power at redline. I thought initially this could have been the drop in the power curve but now I think that was probably the fuel getting cut off.
This car revs sooo much faster than my DD 135i Still gotta get used to it. |
