Perfectly safe, tho your going to hate driving them when it's NOT snowing.

Given your profile says Toronto you would be better suited for a 255 squared setup.

How so? bumpy and uncomfy? I paid almost 2k for my 225s last winter for rim and tire lol so I wana use them this winter and then sell and buy a new 245 square set up next winter

225 won't provide enough grip when you want to boot it in the dry or do a little spirited driving.

If you don't care about that, 225 is fine.

I just mounted Michelin PA4 on the stock 20" ZCP wheels. 245/35 front and 275/30 rear. The tires have a bulging sidewall so it needed a 15mm spacer up front to fit. Gonna install a 12mm spacer in the rear to match the front for looks I just need another set of extended lug bolts. Looks great very aggressive on a max drop M perf suspension and NO rubbing but does it come oh so close!

255 is the narrowest and it's still a little stretched although safe. I'm on my 2nd year 255 squared

I looked at going smaller but definitely there will be issues with the tire properly sealing.
255 squared is the best option.

255/40/18 square. Better to go square IMO. Gives you the ability to rotate wheels front to back. Cheaper to get tires.

I would go with stock sizing. You can run slightly smaller widths if you really want to but I would keep it stock.

i absolutely love my dunlop winter sport 3D as a sporty winter tire. excellent responsiveness and cornering. these tires retain a lot of sportiness while still ensuring you don't get stuck in the snow. their snow performance isn't as good as more dedicated tires but like mentioned here, if 95%+ of your time is spent driving on wet and dry pavement, this is the right tire for a sports car.

wanted to ask if anyone has been able to compare wider and narrower winter tires in snow? i'm running a square 225 setup on my car, 225/45 in the front and 225/50 in the rear (summer setup is 245/35 front, 275/35 rear) with the idea that a smaller contact patch digs into snow better and a wider contact patch wouldn't dig in as well and is more likely to break traction.

also consistently great service from steelcase tires in markham over the past few years if anyone is still looking for a recommendation as to where to go.

My 2 cents is wet traction for the F8x is already not great, put a dust cover of snow or ice on top and it gets even worse. Even if you decide to not to drive when it snows, there's no guarantee you won't run into unexpected snow squalls. There can also be unexpected ice on dry pavement.

Winter driving to me is almost purely defensive even on the best of days. No one should be racing or driving aggressive/fast. IMHO, winter performance tires is a compromise not unlike all seasons for summers. The only place where I can see where winter performance tires fitting in Canada is Vancouver where it hardly snows and the softer rubber of winter tires gives you better traction in sub-zero temperature.

For other places in Canada, particular for the F8x, I think you go for the best snow/ice traction tires you can find and that means getting proper snow/ice tires. It's your best insurance against an accident. We've been lucky here in Toronto the past 2 winters where we've had relatively fewer snow. But they're predicting worse than average and what worked the past 2 winters may not be so fine this winter.

I will take it a step further by stating that I live in Vancouver, and last year ended up being stuck not once, but twice with a M3 that had Blizzaks.

Perhaps the difference in opinion on Winter tires (whether or not certain snow tires are "overkill") depends on whether or not a person has to drive their car everyday? Or if you have multiple vehicles, can take transit if need be, etc. then maybe it isn't such a big deal? For me, I have to drive every day, and ensuring the safest experience is paramount.

Hi All, a bit late to the party on this one so have gone for a punt on a new set of winters by GripMax (they make off road SUV tyres normally).

They have made a set of "Performance" winter tyres that were very reasonably priced (500 euros including P&P from Germany) for a full set (2x 275/35/19, 2x 255/35/19) so I'll see how they do...

Worst case, they are awful and I chuck them back on eBay.

Best case, I recommend them all to you and don't crash my car in the snow/ice
