Shift indicator - what's it for?

Does anyone know what this is? Is it the recommended gear that the car says you should be in? I purposely downshifted one gear so I can take the pic. Seems like when I am barely getting the car going, by the time I look down, it already tells me I should be in 5th or 6th when I'm still at 2nd or 3rd gear.

Ahh, makes sense, that is what I thought. For some reason, I am unable to attach the pic...it's not showing

Yes, if you follow the indicator's recommendations, you'll never go above 1500 RPM, just on the cusp of stalling..

Lately, I always see the upshift indicator from 1 to 3, 4, etc. but never get the downshift indicator. Even when driving in 4th gear, coming to a compete stand still, and having to press the clutch at last minute to avoid stalling, I still did not get the downshift indicator. Anyone else's do that?

It's pretty funny; the car tells you to be in 6th gear at any speed above 40 mph.

My thoughts exactly. When I'm driving an M car the last thing I care about is my fuel economy. If I really cared for mpg's I would've gotten a Prius

I'm pretty sure that if you follow the shift requests of the economy settings you will destroy your engine.

You will constantly be bogging the shit out of it and I'm pretty sure engines don't enjoy that.

Somewhat funny story about the eco shift indicators. First week I had the car the mrs "stole" it while I was out of town. I came back that night and she was all stressed out and didn't want to tell me what happened. Come to find out she "couldn't keep up with the car telling her to shift gears all the time" and she was very concerned she was hurting the engine all day. We had a good chuckle and she now knows just shift before the red lights come on the tach.

While on this topic, what RPM do you guys typically shift at? Obviously not what the indicator is saying. I typically shift between 2-3k during acceleration and cruise between 1800-2200 RPM, normal city driving/cruising of course. Not spirited driving

It is so difficult to maintain self control behind the wheel of that beast lol

I shift at like 3k. I think BMW put that in there for emissions reasons. Maybe it helps their cause.

DCT owner here but previously owned a 6MT vehicle. I'm still in my break-in period but set on auto, it's crazy what gears the car auto selects. From a dead stop and into a 5mph roll, the car is already in D2. Around 30mph it's in D4. Anything close to 45mph is D7. It's a good thing this car has a lot of torque. Otherwise it wouldn't go anywhere. I agree, most of the time in stop and go traffic, it's on the cusp of stalling. Unfortunately a 6mt wasn't on my shopping list. Traffic can be brutal here and the significant other can't drive a manual. It was DCT or sit on the sidelines. Life is full of compromises to get behind an ///M

I feel like the MT shifts near butter smooth between 2-3k in what I'd call "not an asshole to my neighbors at 5am mode". For what ever reason I feel like it's somewhat less smooth between 3-5k and above 5k the ease of shift comes back. It's probably just me.

drive a Vette or F-body and bask in the glory of skip shift if you think an indicator is bad.

There wasn't a shift indicator in the DCT, was there? I don't recall seeing one.

But there's a shift indicator even in my GT3.. it's inescapable.

I thought it was there to penalize drivers who are granny shifting because it goes away if you open the throttle more or rev 1st gear higher

If so, that's a new feature as far as I know. Originally, it could not be turned off (nor on, as the thread pointed to in my post above reveals).

For now, I'll leave this thread separate and open, but really, the thread I linked to above has answers to most questions about the "Optimum Shift Indicator", and should be read by anyone who has questions about it.

By the way, I found the other thread by Googling:
