June is most likely when allocations will come out. I would highly suggest if you want to get the first units you should put a deposit down at your dealer and get in writing that you will get their first allocation or 2nd. I am going to say that I think allocations are going to be very low since that has been the trend with M3s. If you get the first set of allocation you can expect the car stateside roughly september time frame.
July production

@B-52Gunner,
Did you negotiate price yet? ie "X off of MSRP". Also what dealership took your deposit at this point? I've done the same thing with a dealership here in FL, I'm just curious what other dealerships entertained your goal of a deposit for allocation. |

We negotiated the price based on current pricing it will probably change a little, but I did not wan to miss out. I buy all of my BMW's from the same dealer in upstate NY.

Ah I see... good I did the same. Scared that they'll give my spot away to the next highest bidder. Since I negotiated a pretty decent price off... of the 'then listed ED MSRP' I dont know if they''l just give my place away for their first 2018 M3 allocation to anyone willing to pay sticker or over sticker.

I had a local dealer tell me with utmost confidence that they would have a 2018 M3 allocation in April and a build date sometime in July. Said they were "owed a favor." Doesn't sound right based on the available information, does it? It would require only a refundable deposit so it doesn't seem like they're trying to pigeon-hole me.

Not "skipping", it takes BMW 2-3 years to develop an M version of a new model after the new model is released. The M models are never introduced at the same time the base model on which it is developed is released. I don't have the information at hand, but go back and look at when the F30/F32 were introduced and how long before the F80/F82 were introduced. Same for the E90 and the E90 M3, and so on.
Bottom line, if you want an M3 and you don't buy one by October 2018, it will be 2-3 years before the Gxx model of the M3 is available. F82 M4s will continue for another couple of years IIRC.

Per the best estimate on the forum "http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901686", G20 (3 series "donor" body) Start of production (SOP) Model Year 2019 (which I translate to meaning announce next Spring, available at dealers in the late summer). M3 replacement would therefore be expected MY 21, announce/ship 2020. Interesting that the new 4 series End Of Production is 2020, which I would think means a new model in 2020. That would push the M4 out of phase with the M3.

In a perfect world, the M3 would be a separate product that did not borrow M4 exterior parts (the front end). If BMW were to base the M3 front end on the 3 Series instead of the 4 Series, then the M3 could theoretically precede the 4 Series (and thereby, the M4) release. I think there is actually a chance that they finally do that with the Gxx generation, but I would not necessarily bet on it. If it were to happen, it would mean the M3 would probably launch in early 2020. However, assuming that does not happen because it probably won't, we should see the next M3 and M4 launch together in early 2021. |
