Nail in tire - plug or replace?
I'm bummed this happened with less than 2k miles on the clock. This hasn't happened to me in 10+ years I think. Anyway, is this too close to the sidewall to plug?

I had two screws in two tires recently. I initially plugged them as they were small, however I had over 12k miles on them. The new michelins came out a week later so I replaced all four tires and tossed the two with plugs. I would see if you can replace just the one tire and see if discount tire will prorate it for you if you buy new from them.

Plug and be done with it. Puncture isn't in or close enough to the sidewall to create any additional issues. Plugs, when done right will last as long as the tire which in the case of the MPSS won't be long anyway lol!!!
I'd be more concerned with that scratch on the fender!! Haha |

Its far enough away from the sidewall to put a patch on......as previously posted patch it. Don't replace as it looks like you got some good thread left.
I had a similar screw/nail in my MPSS but was too close to the side wall for a patch. Had 18K on the tires so I replaced both rears in lieu of plug $500 and change delivered from Tirerack for both rears.

BMW has a contract with Michelin that first year M cars get Michelin PSS (probably will be PS4S on the next gen), so all MY 2015 M3/M4s got PSS. 2016, 2017, and 2018 were/will be split between PSS and Continentals. All 10 M2s that were part of the group Euro Delivery got PSS (first year). I did a poll in a different thread and currently the PSS and Continental are running 50/50.

Thanks all. Now I need to find a place that will patch it without scraping the rim. BMW Dealer doesn't want to patch - they want me to replace the tire, of course.

Depending on the angle of the pic can be a bit deceiving. I just had a nail twice in that area, and multiple REPUTABLE shops (not your 10 dollar side shop that will do anything for a buck) refused to patch/plug it. No they didn't even offer me tires, they just refused because it's too close to the sidewall.
The proper procedure would be to both PLUG AND PATCH. Not just one. Although many of you have been "okay" with just plugging or patching alone, I would not mess around with the main thing that sticks my booty to the ground. Do it right or don't do it at all. Normally I'd chime along with others, but that's still pretty close to the sidewall no matter what. My 2c. Last edited by Ever.; 05-05-2017 at 02:58 PM.. |

Do not use this tire on the track if you do decide to patch/plug. Safe for the street, not the track. Speed rating of a patched/plugged tire is reduced.

the flex of the tyre and lack of belted area increases the chance of the patched plug being dislodged, I have used tyres on track with similar positioned plugs with no issues but I knew the risks I was taking. The last thing you want is a sidewall to fail at speed. If it was any closer to the tyre wall than in the picture above i'd replace but it looks like you could just get away with that although a lot of places wouldn't do that repair for you.

How convenient to bring this thread back up, as I just dealt with this yesterday afternoon (fun!) in my wife's brand new X3 M40i (winter tire) w/400 miles on the clock!
Which tire repair shops are you guys having luck with that don't chew up your rim and provide a patch/plug combination?
