A few of us like the direction BMW is heading, and don't see it as soft. I apologize for the anger, and talking down on Jap brands (I own a subaru I'd rather track than my BMW, but I also know when it comes to driving myself to work, mall, take the gf out, the BMW has the Jap brands beat, and thats what I referred to the Jap brands. Now getting the two to work together is great. Let's see what they can make).

I'm really not too fond of many of the decisions recently made by BMW.

Beautiful render BTW
BMW is going to try to earn money in Audi's way.
Practically all Audis (in Germany) are either company leasing vehicles or/and sold to companies. BMW is just a little better of. Only Mercedes has some 45% "hardware" customers.
Part of leasing are big price discounts; BMW is calculating that a higher (inflated) official price will bring more money after a hefty discount (as "we gave you 25%").
Audi is very good in this discount fair show.

The majority of such premium versions are planned as company leasing, so they are adjusting their starting position to make more money possible.

Few years back I wanted a certain model; money on the table=no discount. Bought through a leasing company (gave them a commission for a provisory leasing contract) and I got 2 fleet discounts!!!

nice render!!

Hope the name change and price disparity from the 3 series will mean greater diversity in the design of the front and rear of the car this time round.

Not a fan of the render. The Hoffmeister kink looks off and the slope of the rear window onto the trunk is too pronounced. Everything about this coupe that could say BMW is gone.

Don't get me wrong though, I believe the engine is going to be sweet even if it is an in-line six.

I doubt the IS-F style slide slits make it to production. I hope not anyway.

More than the engine, I'm interested in the stock 4-chassis and what M do to it. From what I've read, the stocker will have a wider and more sporting focus, so with the M increased track and tires on top of that it should grip and grip (and be even more stable than the E92 M when you don't want it to grip ) Losing even 100 lbs is a real step forward, especially since the 5-er put on another 300.

this type of speculation always occurs before a new model is released. when we see the actual pics of the sedan (most likely jan 2013) and the coupe (by summer 2013) most of us will be back on the BMW wagon.

...they have a great starting point, atleast in terms of the 4doors. My f30registration shows a vehicle weight of 3555, so there is a good starting point for balance, and if M can shave off some weight to make up for the larger parts to handle the extra power, the new car will have great handling and stability. My first long trip of 300miles included me plus 3 adults 6ft tall, we fit perfectly and in comfort, and the cruise proved how tight the F30s steering and handling was as I was in the 80-100 range all trip and the car just ate up the road with no body leaning and instant power. The f30 is a great basis for the next M, and Im of the opinion that a new war is going to start brewing in bmw land, similar to the cayman vs 911 p-car wars. The f30 is so good that the f80 will be a monster in all measurable ways, and in reality it will be the much more competent sports saloon, even compared to the F10 M5. It will only be the fact that BMW and M have to holdback the M3 power in the future or it would certainly compete, if not beat the M5 around the 'ring. I cant wait to see what they offer in terms of performance and how fast it is around the 'ring

Good post, with good first hand reports and some good points. Like you, I'm a convert from the 5/6 to the 3/4. Luxury and performance are musts, but too much weight and the latter is lost, from a feel point of view at least.

Only one issue with your post and that is that the F80/2 will almost definitely beat the f10 M5's time around the 'Ring. Off the top of my head, the M3 has always been faster than the M5 of the same generation. Now, as regards neutering the power so the M5s remain faster on the freeway- yes, that they will have to make sure of. But I still know where my money's going inside two years....

They have made good upgrades in the F30 in terms of lux, and Im sure the M3 will take it to the next level, and the M4GC will be very customizable, similar to the 6er GC. I would have loved a leather dash again and full leather option, its the little things like that which made the M6 so special and my only disappointments in the 3er thus far as you sort of get used to how nice they are to live with day to day...but thats just nit picking of course, the sportness of the 3er and the spaciousness makes it a really competent 4 door sports saloon.

On the ring times, I wasnt sure if they held the M3 back in the past when compared to the M5 so that it was faster on the 'ring, so its good to know that even in the past its been the front runner (though Im sure the M5 guys will protests!). Its going to be fun to see how this plays out, and certainly I'll be looking for either the M3 or M4GC to be my next foray back in the world of M.

Agreed!

I hope the new M3 will have an option for full leather..its time they get the full leather treatment. Once you've owned a car with full leather, its tough to go back to a plastic plain dashboard and doors!

That render looks awful - all chavved up ricer crap and no class. And at least now we know why BMW dropped the 35D from the F30/31 range ... they saved them for the 4

Would love it if someone would confirm why the 3 series sedan is an F30 and the M3 will be an F80?
This is a first that the M version of a vehicle will have a different chassis code?

The E90 3 series sedan was still called an E90 M3 and the coupe and convertible was the E92/3 M3 just like the 328 and 335

I had the same questions when I started looking into the new models some time a go, but it does seem to be the case that they decided to give the M3 a different model designation, it will be the same case in the coupe models....there's been a lot of discussion on this, evidently there is so much different that they decided it needed its own delineation.

Didnt we also see a post from SCOTT that the M4 GC will be noted as the F86, I thought I recalled seeing that somewhere at some point

Regarding the note about the 425d and 435d - yes 218hp sounds right for the 425d (right in line with the current 125d and 525d), but 286hp for the 435d? No way. It will be 300hp+ just like the 535d, and other 35d models.
