I have a buddy who told me he got to spend some time with some M engineers a while back, and that ~400 BHP is about all RWD can really handle. My F80 ZCP definitely has trouble putting all of the power down (although my understanding is that this has gotten better over time with the F80/82). Unless they find a way to drastically reduce weight, it's just a lot easier to add more power and AWD. We shall see...

I'd take less power and less weight over more power and AWD. Making a lighter car solves many problems.

I am sure you will agree. Otherwise you need a McLaren P1. |

I expect AWD will be inevitable at some point sadly. Yet I expect we'll still not see a tourer (wagon) version :/ |

Sad that BMW can't figure out how to effectively put the power to the ground, while a camaro SS (factory vs factory setup) isn't a handful to drive due to spinning the rear tires.

The new RS3 is actually very tempting.
At the risk of sounding juvenile, I fear the day an RS3 pulls up next me at a red light, with a light drizzle in the forecast... |

BMW has the same suspension setup in three F8x vehicles. The shorter wheelbase M2 does NOT have the issues with putting down torque that the M3/M4 does. The same thing happened the other way when BMW put the E9x suspension under the E82 1M. The 1M was the chassis that couldn't put the power to the ground whereas E9x was considered to be sublime. With turbos BMW is still trying to sort out how to get all the power to the ground. They are improving ... from the 1M to F8x M3/M4 to M2. Perhaps the next Generation they will actually have it sorted. |

Even if you could turn off the AWD you can't turn the extra mass it's carrying off. I already have an X5M I don't need another two ton M car. |

Adding horsepower is fun but shedding weight is an addiction. Started with the M3PE, Dinan sway bars and BBS FI-r's. I think carbon structure seats help.
How diffucult would it be for BMW to deliver a seriously lightened up M3/M4? I don't really get why the M4CS has a full leather interior? Gotta be at least a Cow in there |

and a DCT too...
Remember a certain BMW person saying DCT's are dead because transmission at their limits? Think BMW is just lazy/don't want to spend money in updating/making another M-DCT that can handle more.

I didn't say I agreed with it. it's just obviously becoming the company line, and the "reason" we will be seeing more AWD in the M models.
