Opal White Interior: P-Wagon or Maintenance Nightmare?
So a lot of people have asked about the Opal White interior on my 2018 M4 CP and if it's difficult to take care of ...
First, let's walk through the entire correct process for maintaining your leather: DON'T FUCKING TOUCH IT. Don't "condition", don't "protect", don't "polish", don't "moisturize", don't fucking touch it. Just don't. Oh you heard you should? Well you heard wrong. See I used to do all that shit and my leather always looked like shit. Then I decided to talk about leather care with the people that actually make the leather, not the people that sell you the leather care products. Turns out the #1 thing I heard is, don't touch it because you'll abrate the protective surface off. So that's what I've been doing for the last 10 years and my leather looks EXACTLY like the day I bought it when I turn in my cars 3 years later. I wear blue jeans and drive the car multiple times daily, including after hiking when I'm super sweaty. Anyway, after 3,000 miles here's my Opal White: Picture aren't great, I'll try for better later, but no visible signs of dirt, grime, or blue jean ink Some crumbs, but no grime, it's bright white, including the arm rest surprisingly You can see dust above the center arm rest: I have a 'vert so she get's dusty! Anyway, so my Opal White leather ruling is:

My wife has Oyster Dakota in her X1. Looks like crap from dark jeans.
I've cleaned it probably half a dozen times in last 2 years. My SO not so much. I'm getting Silverstone int next month, so we shall see.

Gruss, when you say do nothing, do also avoid wiping down with damp, soft microfiber (no product, just damp with water)? What do you do if you spill something on the seats?

My convertibles have always ended up with a lot of dirt on the seats due to driving with the top down. Do you not get that sort of build up GrussGott? If not, what’s your secret? And if you do, how do you go about cleaning it up?

Yeah I'm almost 100% top down including sport driving... I've found tire chunks on my seats! Anyway that's the dust on the top of the rear seats. I use a clean dry white mf to lightly dust. I haven't yet but might be time for a once over.
I always keep a clean dry white mf in the glove box. I just spilled coffee on the driver's seat last week... Basically put the mf on top of the spill to soak up, don't wipe. Warm water if you need it

I'm glad this was posted. I don't touch my leather either, other than a quick wipe down every few months. I am careful when getting in and out as to not add wear. At 13k my leather is perfect and they still have their natural factory smell.

Thanks for the info. Good to know. I like that color and would not have considered otherwise because I had oyster seats in e90 and did indeed get blue jeans ink transfer and super dirty.
Have you had dogs in the car? Interested in whether seats can handle that |

Same I don’t use leather products unless absolutely necessary. A quick wipe with filtered water and microfiber is enough.
Exterior car care products are definitely over hyped today too. |

Please remind me why you went with Opal White over Silverstone? Just personal preference or did Opal Individual provide something you don’t get with Silverstone. I seem to recall you discussing in another thread but getting too old to remember and too lazy to search.

Im a pretty big subscriber to the less is more method of maintaining leather seats too. I used to use all kinds of crap in the past (cleaners and conditioners). All i do now is dust with a plus microfibre cloth and if there is a spill or a spot clean is needed them i use distilled water.

Chicks do walk up and admire it and touch it. Not moms though - they have an instinctual aversion to white materials. All of that aside, it is the best interior I've ever had - I'm as surprised as anyone, but after 12 years of two-tone red/black and carbon this is a pretty big change. |
